Anya Taylor-Joy’s character was the subject of the other major change in Dune: Part Two. In the novel, Paul’s younger sister Alia is born four years before Paul takes back the desert planet from the book’s main villains, the Harkonnens. Villeneuve opted to hold Alia back, though, showing her only in one brief spice-induced hallucination. This wasn’t a bad call—Alia is a weird one.
Alia Atreides is what is known in Dune canon as “pre-born.” Her mom (Lady Jessica) took the Water of Life (the spice-based drug that gave Paul his powers) while she was pregnant, which in turn gave her daughter Bene Gesserit powers in utero. This means that, like the other space nuns, Alia has access to “ancestral memories”—the ability to know everything her foremothers knew. In other words, Alia is born a freaky baby with a full adult personality and hundreds of years of experience. David Lynch really went to town with this idea in his 1984 Dune adaptation, but apparently a talking toddler was just too distracting for Villeneuve’s vision.
That adjustment has some minor implications for the story of Dune 3. The events take place 17 years after the events of Dune 2, not 12 like in the books, presumably because Taylor-Joy can plausibly play 17 but not 12. Functionally, though, it won’t change Alia much—get ready for one of the literally craziest characters in the Herbert universe.
Why is Jason Momoa Here? Didn’t He, Like, Die?

What’s Jason Momoa doing dressed in white in this trailer? His character, Paul’s mentor Duncan Idaho, died in the first movie after an epic hallway fight, right?
Now we’re venturing into spoiler territory, so we’ll keep it light. It certainly seemed like that guy died, though, right? For now, all I’ll say is that Duncan Idaho is one of the most important characters not just in Dune or Dune Messiah but the entire Dune series—the key to some of the most bizarre, metaphysical science fiction Herbert wrote. You’ll definitely see him, and he’ll appear at “the perfect time” according to Villeneuve.
