Netflix recently announced a new animated film titled Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory. It will tell a unique story distinct from previous film adaptations of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Expected to hit the streamer next year, it currently has no official release date.

Netflix’s Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory movie details revealed

Netflix recently announced a new animated film, Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory. Scheduled to be released in 2027, it will be a modern take on Roald Dahl’s narrative. The movie will focus on a new adventure, complete with original songs, new characters, and returning faces, while maintaining the quintessential British charm that defined the original story. Sony Pictures Imageworks, recognized for and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is the animation studio behind the film.

Heartstopper breakout Kit Connor will star as the voice of the new character, Charlie Paley. Meanwhile, Oscar-winning filmmaker and actor Taika Waititi will lend his voice to the eccentric Willy Wonka. In addition, Waititi also serves as executive producer, while fellow Academy Award-winner Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo are the producers.

Jared Stern, known for The LEGO Batman Movie, and Elaine Bogan, whose credits include Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia and Spirit Untamed, helm the movie.

“Willy Wonka (Taika Waititi) has spent the years since the Golden Ticket contest behind bars (not the chocolate kind) for the crime of turning a child into a blueberry,” reads the official synopsis. “Having served his time, Wonka returns to his factory determined to add a little sweetness to a bitter world. But one thing stands in his way: teenager Charlie Paley (Kit Connor) and his friends.”

It continues, “Facing eviction, this next generation of ‘rotten’ kids plot to break into the factory, nab a priceless Wonka Bar, and save their homes. But like many before them who enter the fantastical world of the factory, these kids are in for a bit more than they can chew…”

Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory’s announcement comes five years after Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021, effectively securing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s rights.
