In the latest example of the Chicago Police Department’s endless incompetence, corruption, and inability to protect even its own, newly released bodycam footage has exposed the shocking death of Officer Krystal Rivera – shot in the back by her partner, Officer Carlos Baker, during a chaotic foot chase on June 5, 2025.
Prosecutors and Baker’s defenders are pushing the tired narrative of an “unintentional discharge” amid a “dynamic encounter” with an armed suspect. But Rivera’s family isn’t buying it. They call the official story a smell test failure and have filed a wrongful death lawsuit accusing Baker of everything from negligence to a straight-up cover-up. And after watching the footage, it’s easy to see why skeptics are screaming murder, not mishap.
The video, released by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), shows Baker and Rivera pursuing a suspect, Jaylin Arnold, who they believed was carrying a drum magazine under his jacket. The chase spills into an apartment building in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood. As Baker kicks toward a doorway and encounters what appears to be another armed individual inside, a single shot rings out.
That bullet? It rips into Rivera’s back. She collapses in the hallway.
Instead of immediately rushing to his partner – the woman he had an on-again, off-again romantic relationship with- Baker bolts up the stairs, takes cover for nearly two minutes, and initially reports “shots fired at police” as if the bad guys were responsible. Only later, after forensics apparently proved otherwise, does the story shift to “oops, my gun just went off.”Baker’s attorney claims he “immediately” called for EMS, helped move Rivera to safety, and then went back to apprehend the offenders.
The family’s lawyers paint a very different picture: a delayed response, no real first aid, dragging her like dead weight down the stairs, and a partner who seemed more concerned with self-preservation than saving the woman he once dated.
