Daredevil: Born Again season 3 is taking a second chance on a dead villain.
Born Again season 2 ended in a shocker, with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) disclosing his secret identity as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. With Matt imprisoned and Wilson Fisk in exile, season 3 is a soft reset for many characters, including Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva). After experiencing PTSD from being nearly murdered by Muse, the final moment reveals that the therapist will don the mask, which seemingly resurrects the Marvel villain.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, creator and showrunner Dario Scardapane spoke on the decision to bring back the dangerous antagonist after season 2 planted the seeds of Heather inheriting the identity. Shockingly, the creative mind admitted that “we didn’t do justice to: the original Muse storyline in season 1,” citing the limits that they had on what could be filmed with the villain.
Since the original Muse didn’t “have the heft,” the showrunner started to think really deeply about how Heather was “dealing with the trauma and is in this realm of Matt and Fisk.” This led to the key question of “What happens if she literally puts on that trauma, and that trauma solves a lot of her conflict?” Scardapane felt that this approach “seems supernatural if you watch the way it’s progressing, and now we have a Muse that isn’t just dropped in. Now you have the [character] development of, why would she become this thing?“
In terms of how this will impact season 3, he stated, “I don’t think anybody’s prepared exactly for where this is going, and that’s still fun.”
In season 1, Muse was originally played by Hunter Doohan, who portrayed Bastian Cooper, a patient of Heather whom he eventually attacks and nearly kills. After a scuffle with Daredevil, Heather was the one who pulled the trigger and killed him. Despite surviving the events, season 2 showcased her experiencing severe trauma to the point where she even hallucinates him and becomes violent.
However, these events pushed theories that Heather was slowly spiraling into Muse, something which was revealed in season 2’s final moments. Interestingly, this deviates from the source material, as the comic version of Heather didn’t end up becoming Muse.
Despite the key change, there is a female Muse in the comics. Morgan Whittier took on the identity of the Marvel villain after the original Muse was sent to Hell. She was still influenced by the original antagonist, who sometimes appeared as a ghost-like figure. Now, the Disney+ show is bringing a version of this with Heather as the moniker.
Although Heather simply puts on the mask, Daredevil: Born Again season 3 set photos have already revealed Levieva donning a Muse-inspired attire, with the bloody mask, plain white top, black pants, a black coat, and a gray beanie. It’s unclear whether she will be the main villain or if the upcoming installment will focus on Fisk, who will also return.
While plot details are under wraps, Born Again season 3 will also see Cox return as Daredevil, alongside the big Defenders reunion with Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage, and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist.
