Graduating from college is a great accomplishment, but what do you do next? You may be thinking about moving to a new city, getting a place to live, or starting a career.
But one factor that could get jump started your success or derail your potential is where you live. Some cities may be better when it comes to professional opportunities while others could help you get started by having an affordable cost of living. Even if you’ve already had jobs and are starting a new career, you’ll have to think about issues like the average starting salary for an area or cost of living to see if it’s a good place for you to start a career again.
So whether you’re a recent college graduate starting your first job or you’re switching careers, think about these best and worst cities to get started professionally to see if one of them is right for you—or best for you to avoid—according to WalletHub.
Best Places
1. Atlanta, Georgia
2. Orlando, Florida
3. Austin, Texas
4. Tampa, Florida
5. Miami, Florida
6. Charleston, South Carolina
7. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
8. Knoxville, Tennessee
9. Salt Lake City, Utah
10. Columbia, South Carolina
Cities in the south may be the best place to look if you’re starting out in a new career.
Atlanta tops the list for best places to start a career, with factors such as annual job growth and the number of entry-level positions. The median annual household income in Atlanta is over $94,000, according to WalletHub, giving new professionals a good financial start with their jobs.
Florida also has a strong showing with three cities in the top 10, buoyed by the state’s ability to attract young talent. Orlando in particular has the highest number of entry-level job openings per capita on the list of 182 cities by WalletHub.
Only two cities in the top 10—Pittsburgh and Salt Lake City—are located outside of the south, and only seven of the top 20 cities don’t call the south home.

Worst Places
1. New York, New York
2. Bridgeport, Connecticut
3. Detroit, Michigan
4. Port St. Lucie, Florida
5. Chula Vista, California
6. Oxnard, California
7. Pearl City, Hawaii
8. Shreveport, Louisiana
9. Jackson, Mississippi
10. Anaheim, California
Cost of living could be sinking some cities for people starting out, with factors like housing costs and other expenses hindering job seekers and putting cities on the list of worst places to start a career.
New York, Hawaii, and California are some of the most expensive states. This makes sense, considering New York City is number one on the least of worst cities to start a career in. California has three cities in the top 10, while Hawaii is also represented. And while Florida was represented among the best places to start a career, it’s also on the worst list, with Port St. Lucie being less than ideal if you’re starting out professionally.

Where to Start
So what should you think about when deciding where you want to start your career?
WalletHub’s survey weighed heavily on professional factors like how many entry-level jobs are available in one place, monthly average starting salary, and median-income growth rate. It also took into consideration personal factors including the average hourly work in a week, housing affordability, and whether cities are good places for singles or families, depending on a worker’s life situation.
But while starting a new career can be a challenge, it’s important to take into consideration your most important factors before packing up and heading to a new city that’s best for you to kickstart your career.
