The creator and former showrunner of X-Men ’97 has spoken about the circumstances surrounding his firing from Marvel Studios. The screenwriter exited his acclaimed show in 2024 only weeks before its premiere.
Beau DeMayo talks about his falling out with Marvel
DeMayo reflected on his time at Marvel and the eventual rift with the company in interviews with Vanity Fair, spanning months. At the time of his firing, The Hollywood Reporter stated in an article that DeMayo had a non-explicit OnlyFans account. In those Vanity Fair interviews, DeMayo said he was “very honest” with Marvel Studios about his OnlyFans activity. “It was cleared,” he added. “It was like, ‘It is your personal life. As long as you’re not advertising the show on your OnlyFans, as long as you’re keeping it very separate from the content of the show, it’s outside of their purview.’”
In another interview conducted in November 2024, DeMayo claimed he faced discrimination and belittlement from his colleagues, recalling remarks such as “oh, you don’t look like a showrunner,” and “you don’t look like a writer.” He added, “There was that vibe that I was the DEI hire, where, ‘Oh, they just got a gay Black guy because he checks all the marks and it’s X-Men.’”
In their report, the outlet notes DeMayo talked about his time at Marvel at length in multiple interviews before he stopped responding to them. In 2025, DeMayo and his team reportedly “cast doubt” on the previous interactions with the outlet.
Back in 2024, DeMayo filed a lawsuit against Marvel. According to Vanity Fair, it’s still very much active. DeMayo has been quite candid on social media about his termination from Marvel. However, he doesn’t seem to be that active on most platforms these days, except maybe Instagram.
Notably, X-Men ’97 returned with Season 2 on July 1, 2026. The first three episodes debuted together. The rest of them will stream weekly on Wednesdays on Disney+.
