Carrie Coon Is Great In Both Shows

Carrie Coon’s Laurie was arguably one of the best characters in The White Lotus season 3, and the same is true of her character, Bertha Russell, in The Gilded Age. The period drama takes place in New York in the 1880s among the city’s wealthy elites, with the central conflict being between the old and new money people. The Gilded Age masterfully explores gender, race, and class dynamics and how its characters strive to advance their placements within the strict society of the time period without feeling too heavy.

Within this rigid social structure, Coon’s Bertha Russell is one of the most interesting and entertaining characters. Bertha falls squarely within the new money group, making her entrance into high society difficult. Despite having far more money than the majority of old money people around her, she is excluded at every turn. Her determination and pettiness are very fun to watch as she gradually attempts to take down the city’s traditions, and her stubbornness gives her a slight similarity to The White Lotus‘s Laurie.

The Gilded Age has just 2 seasons so far, but both have been very highly rated by critics. The stakes for the wealthy characters never feel very high, but their opulent costumes and settings are beautiful enough to draw viewers in and keep them there. The Gilded Age is the perfect watch for fans of other period dramas who can appreciate the hugely talented cast.

However, though The Gilded Age has received great reviews from critics, audiences have been more mixed on the series. Some audiences loved the low-stakes drama of wealthy characters fighting over opera attendance or suitable romances and praised the performances.
