Vin Diesel’s Franchise-Saving 78% Rotten Tomatoes Blockbuster Gets Overtaken by ‘Lilo & Stitch’ at Global Box Office

It’s rare to see a franchise escape from the jaws of death, but that’s exactly what happened with the Fast & Furious series. Back in 2009, the Fast & Furious movies seemed to have reached the end of the road. Street racing didn’t seem as cool as it did a decade ago, and the most recent installment, Fast & Furious, wasn’t as successful as it ought to have been. It was then decided to alter the very DNA of these movies. Universal bet big on this new vision, and the movie that came out of this creative rejig was Fast Five. It was a critical and commercial smash, grossing around twice as much as its predecessor and sending the series into an entirely new direction.

Fast Five recently saw its box office record being smashed by the recently released Disney tent pole Lilo & Stitch. Released in 2011, the movie made a total of $629 million at the worldwide box office, against a reported budget of $125 million. By comparison, the franchise’s fourth installment had ended its run with $360 million worldwide. Directed by Justin Lin, Fast Five was also a critical hit, and it’s currently sitting at a “certified fresh” 78% Rotten Tomatoes score — the second-best in the series’ history, behind the 82% earned by Furious 7.

On its 14th day of release, Lilo & Stitch generated around $5.5 million domestically, which was enough to push it past the $630 million mark at the global box office. The film’s running worldwide haul stands at $632 million, which also puts it ahead of the original Kung Fu Panda movie. In the next few days, Lilo & Stitch will overtake the lifetime global hauls of Wonka, and Thor: The Dark World. By the end of its third weekend, the movie should break into the list of the top 100 hits in global box office history.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Earned a Big Thumbs Up from Audiences

Produced on a reported budget of $100 million, Lilo & Stitch is a remake of the 2002 animated original, which made around $280 million worldwide. The live-action remake is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, who previously made the acclaimed film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. Unlike that movie, however, Lilo & Stitch opened to mediocre reviews. It holds a 71% score on the aggregator website, although its far superior audience score of 93% more than makes up for it. Meanwhile, the Fast & Furious series is set to conclude with an upcoming 11th film. You can watch Lilo & Stitch in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
