When it comes to Western TV shows, no writer is releasing as much content on a regular basis as Taylor Sheridan. Just this year, the legendary Western scribe has released a pair of Yellowstone spin-offs, Dutton Ranch and Marshals, that further continue the story of the Kevin Costner-led neo-Western that wrapped up a few years ago after five seasons. For those who are ready to leave the era of Yellowstone behind, Sheridan presented The Madison, a completely original Western story starring big names like Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell. Sheridan is soon to shift genres from dusty Westerns to intense crime thrillers later this year with new seasons of Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown. The highly anticipated third season of Lioness has also been set for release on August 2, with Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown likely to follow.
Taylor Sheridan’s shows, particularly Yellowstone and Landman, have become so popular in the last few years that it has led other streaming services to try and find replacements that tap into the same audiences. Last year, Netflix settled on Ransom Canyon as its Taylor Sheridan replacement series, and while it took some time, the show was ultimately renewed for Season 2. After confirming earlier this week that Ransom Canyon Season 2 will premiere next month on July 23, Netflix dropped the first trailer for the next batch of episodes this afternoon, teasing much higher stakes in the Western epic led by Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly. Ransom Canyon isn’t a one-for-one Yellowstone dupe — the show is based more in romance than crime — but fans of Sheridan’s breakout show are still sure to find a good time in Netflix’s sweeping new Western.
What Is ‘Ransom Canyon’ Season 2 About?
Netflix’s official synopsis of Ransom Canyon Season 2 reads as follows:
“Ransom Canyon Season 2 picks up six months after the events of the first season, with rancher Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) fighting to reclaim his legacy after being unseated as trustee of his family’s Double K Ranch, while musician Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly) must decide if her heart truly belongs in the small town she once tried to outrun or in the fast-paced world of New York City. Are they star-crossed lovers, or fated to be together? In Ransom Canyon, true love stories are messy, complicated, and always worth the wait.”
Additional cast members for Ransom Canyon Season 2 include Lizzy Greene, Garrett Wareing, Jack Schumacher, Marianly Tejada, Casey W. Johnson. The show was written and produced by April Blair, who also serves as showrunner.
