A TV series adaptation of a Pulitzer Prize winning comic has officially been cancelled, three years after the show was announced to be in development. While most comic adaptations on TV are often associated with superheroes, from the Arrowverse to the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again season 2, others are based on strip comics, like Garfield in his various forms.
One comic is the Pulitzer Prize winning series Bloom County. The comic strip follows various characters in the titular locale, commentating on Middle American political and cultural viewpoints. In 2022, it was announced Bloom County would be an animated TV show from FOX, with The Simpsons writer Tim Long serving as the showrunner. Steve and Opus would’ve been the protagonists.
Now, an official Facebook post from Berkeley Breathed’s Bloom County has confirmed the TV series has been cancelled. The post explains how the show would have featured the core duo alongside a different version of Steve’s mother. While the pilot was about to go into production, the series was cancelled by FOX without explanation not long after the 2024 Presidential Election:
What Bloom County’s Cancelled TV Show Means For The Comic’s Future
As the announcement states, Bloom County, as a comic strip, isn’t going anywhere. However, the show is no longer joining the likes of Family Guy season 24 nor The Simpsons season 37 on the channel’s lineup. Based on the announcement, it also seems like there aren’t any immediate plans to shop the series to other potential networks.
Bloom County was going to be produced by Bento Box Entertainment, Miramax, Spyglass Media Group, and Project X Entertainment.
It’s unclear if the presidential election had anything to do with Bloom County‘s cancellation. However, the political and social commentary of the show would have joined the likes of South Park season 27 in terms of discussion of such topics, even if the comic strip wouldn’t go as far as the Comedy Central series. Nonetheless, it’s a disappointing development.
Our Take On Bloom County’s Cancellation At FOX
Given how many years Bloom County‘s adaptation was in development for, it’s underwhelming to know such an interesting take on the comic strip is now being sidelined. It’s unclear if the motive was political or not, but the show would have provided ample commentary on Middle American politics. But this won’t happen anymore now that it won’t be produced.
Luckily, the Pulitzer Prize winning comic is still being created, with the show’s cancellation not impeding upon the source material’s plans. It’s possible the comic may even use this as inspiration, despite how disappointing the cancellation is. At the very least, Bloom County‘s comic existence won’t be impeded by this animated cancellation, even if the series would have been fun.
