While promoting his new documentary aka Charlie Sheen, Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen opened up about the fallout he had with Jon Cryer. Two and a Half Men was a hugely successful sitcom for CBS when it aired from 2003 to 2015.
As one of the two leads, he was a critical component of the series, but Sheen was fired after his public tirade against creator Chuck Lorre following his stints in rehab that shut down production. Sheen also lashed out at Cryer after his co-star refrained from talking about the firing, which led to their fallout.
The Two and a Half Men alum is now reflecting on all the turmoil in a documentary called aka Charlie Sheen, including his fallout with Cryer.
While speaking with People, Sheen revealed that he personally called various people to participate in the documentary, but he didn’t call Cryer, and the reason for that was due to a mixup after he realized he didn’t have his former co-star’s correct phone number.
Cryer does appear in aka Charlie Sheen, but it was actually the director who sent the invitation to him instead of Sheen.
That mixup aside, Sheen has watched Cryer’s comments from the documentary and felt grateful for the honesty, insight and compassion that Cryer had for him, despite their fallout. Sheen ended up sending a message to Cryer to thank him for the contribution and to apologize for not speaking directly to him.
Since Cryer was one of the main stars of Two and a Half Men, he was “in the line of fire” during Sheen’s scandals and subsequent firing, so it had an impact on his career and family, despite not being the one causing issues.
Sheen admitted that Cryer’s assessment regarding the real reason behind his addictions, that he didn’t believe in himself, was spot-on. It felt like a therapy session and a wake-up call to hear Cryer’s words that spoke the truth about what was really going on.
Sheen concluded by admitting that Cryer’s nervousness to talk about him is absolutely justified. At the end of the day, the actor wants to be purposeful from now on and ease any concerns that Cryer still has.
“The only person I didn’t call personally to participate in the doc was Jon. And the only reason I didn’t call him was because I didn’t have the right number for him, so the director reached out to him. But when I saw everything that Jon spoke about, so honestly and very compassionately, I wrote to him and I said, ‘Hey, thank you for your contributions, and I’m sorry we didn’t connect personally. I hope to see you around the campus.’…I’m thinking I wrote to the wrong number. It’s not like Jon did not respond. He’s super responsible like that. So if you’re reading this, Jon, DM me your new number!”
“It was really cool to hear from his perspective. He was in the line of fire with all that stupid s*** going on, and it was affecting him and his family and his career and all that. I can’t debate anything that he said…He nailed that, and I’m so glad he opened that door, because it gave me a chance to really start thinking about that. He said, ‘He’s a guy that doesn’t believe he deserves the things he has, or that it was he earned,’ and I was like, ‘Whoa.’…Suddenly, I felt like I was on a couch in Jon’s therapy office, and he was dead on. That’s something that I’ve felt my whole life, because I had no formal training. I had no formal education, I didn’t even finish high school. And suddenly I’m working and traveling, I’m a star and all this stuff. It just happened. There was no plan. And there was always the voice of doubt there, telling me it’s only a matter of time before this all goes away, so to enjoy this as heartily as you can. That was really insightful of Jon, really, and compassionate.”
What Charlie Sheen’s Reflection On Jon Cryer Fallout Means
The former sitcom star is clearly in a much better place in his life now. It’s very healthy to see that he’s at a point where he can honestly reflect on his behavior and addictions.
When it comes to the fallout with Cryer, the fact that Sheen didn’t actually talk to him personally about appearing in the documentary seems to speak to continued tension. Even though the reason was that Sheen didn’t have Cryer’s phone number, he easily could have asked the director for the number so he could speak to Cryer directly.
It’s possible that Sheen needs more time to try to patch up his friendship with Cryer. Since Cryer did provide a compassionate reflection of Sheen (who accepted it with open arms), that could open the door to a future reconciliation.
It’s impossible to go back and fix the damage caused while Two and a Half Men was on the air, but maybe the two actors can find some peace and forgiveness with each other away from the cameras.
