‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Overtakes Jackie Chan’s Nutty $110 Million Bomb at the Global Box Office

Following an unremarkable performance in its debut weekend at the domestic box office, Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends seems to have been pinned to the ground by a double whammy of strong competition and audience apathy. The movie made under $10 million in its sophomore frame at the domestic box office, essentially sealing its fate. It will fall short of the $50 million mark, which is worth pointing out, because the franchise’s last installment — the 2010 reboot starring Jaden Smith — made $55 million in its debut weekend alone.

With $35 million domestically and another $38 million from overseas markets, Karate Kid: Legendscumulative global haul stands at $74 million so far. The good news is that it didn’t cost all that much to produce. The movie comes with a reported price tag of $45 million, which means that it needs to generate around $100 million in order to break even, going by the rule of thumb. But there’s no denying that this would be a subpar performance for the long-running franchise, especially since Sony’s own recent Ghostbusters movies have been cracking the $200 million mark worldwide.

And neither of them featured a star of Jackie Chan’s stature at their center. Chan played the grief-stricken Mr. Han for the first time in the Smith reboot, which made $350 million worldwide 15 years ago. Karate Kid: Legends has now overtaken the $72 million lifetime haul of 2004’s forgotten big-budget bomb Around the World in 80 Days, which featured Chan in a supporting role. In Karate Kid: Legends, he’s joined by newcomer Ben Wang, and the franchise’s original star, Ralph Macchio, who also appeared in the hit comedy spin-off series Cobra Kai. In fact, the show’s popularity for the better part of the decade probably inspired Sony to go ahead with a new movie.

‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Earned Excellent Audience Reviews

Directed by Jonathan Entwistle, Karate Kid: Legends opened to mixed reviews. It holds a “rotten” 57% Rotten Tomatoes score, but its audience rating on the aggregator website stands at a far more positive 94%. Typically, such an encouraging audience rating would inspire relief at the studio, but audience behaviors are evolving. This week, the John Wick spin-off Ballerina debuted with a similarly high crowd score, but underperformed at the box office. You can watch Karate Kid: Legends in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
