NCIS: Origins just returned for it’s second season TONIGHT (October 14).

The season kicked off with the fate of Mariel Molino‘s Lala being revealed, following the car crash cliffhanger at the end of season one earlier this year.

Lala was on her way to tell Gibbs (Austin Stowell) some good news, but she got into a car accident while veering out of the way of a young girl who ran into the road. The season ended with Lala bleeding and looking lifeless.

In the season two premiere, “The Funky Bunch,” Gibbs and Franks investigate the disappearance of a young Marine connected to a mysterious compound with a charismatic leader, and Lala’s fate is revealed.

It was unveiled that Lala did in fact survive the crash, with the story picking up two months after the accident where she is about to return to work.

“We always knew that we were bringing Mariel back. We love her, the team and the season would be incomplete without her,” co-creator Gina Lucita Monreal shared with TheWrap. “We always knew she was coming back, but it was a bit of a puzzle trying to put that opening together to remind people where we left them and show where we are now.”

“That particular opening took a bit of brain power to put together, but we’re really proud of how it turned out, and Niels Arden Oplev just knocked it out of the park with his direction. We’re so excited for people to see it,” she added.

How does this bode for what’s to come?

“Coming back this year is obviously about dealing with the repercussions of being in an accident like that, both the emotional side and the physical side,” co-creator David North added. “She has a TBI, and we’ll see her battling symptoms of that, but also picking up the pieces and moving on in her own personal life after the almost kiss with Gibbs in the pool. She’s got a lot to deal with.”

Back in June, Mariel quipped that she hoped Lala was alive and that she still had a job.
