The Long-Awaited ’24’ Revival Gets Its Most Exciting Update Yet

24, the 2001 Fox political thriller series, was the first real-time TV series that captivated viewers, running for six seasons. The series, starring Kiefer Sutherland as Special Agent Jack Bauer, spanned 24 hours per season as the agent thwarted numerous domestic threats. Howard Gordon served as an executive producer and showrunner on 24 before helming other shows like Homeland, Accused, and the recent Netflix drama The Beast in Me. The real-time format is experiencing renewed interest with shows like The Pitt and Hijack, but that’s not the entire reason Gordon and the 24 team have been considering a reboot. Ideas have been floated over the years, with one even made it to series — 24: Legacy — but it failed to catch on. Gordon said in a recent interview that another 24 reboot is not out of the question.

“It’s absolutely in process, there’s something we are developing,” he said while promoting The Beast in Me. “They, meaning Disney [parent company of 20th TV] and such, have not committed to it, so it still is a process. Look, it’s actually no secret, and this is worth saying. I, over the years, and obviously various iterations, not just with Jack, but, trying to spin it off with Corey [Hawkins], and with different people. I’ve also sat through dozens of pitches from other writers. I’ve developed a few. I even did a spin-off,” Gordon shared. However, a 24 reboot without Sutherland might be doomed. The actor has said before that he has seen a good script idea and is interested in revisiting this world. Gordon explained their current mindset:

“I have such a nostalgia for that show, and I think Kiefer does too. One thing we couldn’t figure out for a long time was a direction that ever held water, that sustained itself. This feels like it could be, but it’s not formal, it’s not done. And there’s a part of me, Nellie [Andreeva], honestly, that also feels like, particularly at this point in my career and in my life, what I really don’t want to happen is that it’s not good because I don’t think that’s fair to the show. It’s not fair to the fans, not fair to, frankly, to myself. So it has to be something that you connect to, or at least you tell yourself you’re connected to. It may not turn out very well, but you have to at least believe that it’s something.”

Kiefer Sutherland Would Reprise Jack Bauer in a Potential ’24’ Spin-Off

“Howard Gordon has come up with an idea that I like,” Sutherland said a few months ago in a radio interview regarding the topic of a revival. He revealed that “something really good has been written.” However, there have been some shifts in the television landscape since Jack Bauer last appeared on the small screen in 2008. Fox has largely exited scripted-licensing, and Disney now owns 24, so there are some kinks to be ironed out before “it’s either approved or disapproved.” Sutherland said he would love to give fans what they want. “It’s something I would really like to do. I would like to close that story. It was left kind of wide open. So, fingers crossed. There’s a chance. We’ve taken some considerable steps forward,” he said. Whether these steps yield tangible results remains to be seen.

Stay tuned to Collider for more updates about the 24 revival. The complete series is currently available to stream on Hulu.
