While it has certainly had its wings clipped by James Cameron‘s Avatar: Fire and Ash, Disney’s Zootopia 2 is still the highest-grossing Hollywood movie of the year at the global box office. With more than $1.2 billion in the bank, it’s also among the highest-grossing animated films ever made, as it continues to perform counter-programming duties while audiences head to Pandora. Ahead of its fifth weekend of release, Zootopia 2 witnessed a spike in collections at the domestic box office, as it passed the $300 million mark. The movie has earned the majority of its revenue internationally, where it’s set to hit the $1 billion milestone. Zootopia 2 still has enough gas in the tanks to earn millions more, but for now, it can celebrate having overtaken Tim Burton‘s highest-grossing film in 15 years.
This week, Zootopia 2 passed the $295 million lifetime domestic box office haul of Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which debuted last year. It was his biggest hit since Alice in Wonderland, which debuted in 2010. The movie served as a legacy sequel to the filmmaker’s breakout hit from the 1980s, and brought back original cast members Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, alongside franchise newcomer Jenna Ortega, with whom Burton experienced major success on the Netflix show Wednesday. The movie earned mostly positive reviews, and is now sitting at a “certified fresh” 75% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Michael Keaton’s devious poltergeist still has plenty of juice left in this madcap return to form for Tim Burton, marrying charming practical effects and ghoulish gags to provide a fun fun time.”
‘Zootopia 2’ Has Been Embraced by Audiences
Zootopia 2, on the other hand, comes nearly a decade after the original animated film hit the $1 billion mark itself. Starring Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin, the new film opened to positive reviews. It’s currently sitting at a “certified fresh” 91% critics’ score and an even better “verified hot” 96% audience score on RT, where the consensus reads, “Cleverly layering a thoughtful message onto another crackerjack caper while solidifying Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as one of the most endearing buddy pairings in ages, Zootopia 2 more than justifies a return trip to the big city.” Together, Zootopia 2 and Avatar 3 have turned the narrative around for Disney, which became the only studio to hit the $6 billion mark at the global box office this year after a series of disappointing releases. You can watch both movies in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
