A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has two episodes left before its season finale, and Season 2 is scheduled to air next year. So far, Season 1 has performed well since its release, earning high IMDb scores and praise from fans and critics alike despite an initial wave of review bombing. Now, its showrunner, Ira Parker, has made a bold promise: if the show were to continue on HBO, something other showrunners failed to deliver.
This latest Game of Thrones spin-off is set between the events of the main series and House of the Dragon, and is based on The Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, which contain three short stories. So far, only two seasons have been greenlit, and it has yet to be announced if Season 3 will enter production. At the same time, it had previously been reported that George R.R. Martin had shown Parker outlines of other Dunk and Egg tales that could become potential episodes if the show were to continue.
In a recent Reddit AMA, Parker was asked about fans’ concerns about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ future if it were to adapt its stories beyond the published novellas, worried that it might lead to a similar outcome to Game of Thrones, when the show no longer followed the source material. Parker reassured fans that if A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms were to continue, Martin would still be involved in the production.
“Look, in some ways, we know a lot more about what happens after these three novellas because of all the supporting material (you like how I referred to ASOIAF as supporting material for D&E, and so there’s less inherent danger… not no danger, just less… Anything beyond book 3 (if we could ever be so wonderfully lucky) would highly involve George.”
George R.R. Martin’s Feud With HBO, Explained
When Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon first entered production, Martin was heavily involved, serving as executive producer, writer, and consultant. But as the shows progressed, his relationship with the showrunners became rocky. Recently, with House of the Dragon, Martin’s qualms with the showrunner, Ryan Condal, have been made public, as what started as a partnership led to creative differences and the author feeling it was “not his story anymore.”
Now enters A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, with Parker claiming that he and Martin have a “good working relationship” and that he wants to ensure that Martin is happy when adapting his story. So far, Martin has made only one criticism of Parker’s choices in Episode 1, but the two claim they are still on the same page as they work on this spin-off.
