Staying in the lineup every day has always been the big issue that dogs Yordan Alvarez. He has played in 130-plus games just three times in seven seasons, and he’s never finished higher than third in MVP voting.
So far in 2026, nobody in Major League Baseball has been more productive at the plate than Alvarez, and it’s no coincidence that he’s played in every one of his team’s games. Doing so makes him the top early candidate for AL MVP.
Alvarez leads the majors in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage, and has more home runs than all but one player, Chicago White Sox rookie import Munetaka Murakami. Alvarez’s 2.1 WAR (via Fangraphs) leads all major leaguers, even Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani (2.0).
Alvarez and New York Yankees slugger Ben Rice are far and away the early frontrunners for AL MVP, though Rice teammate Aaron Judge is just a hot streak away from making it a three-person race. Rice’s individual hangup hasn’t been health or production, but instead persuading Yankees manager Aaron Boone to write his name in the lineup every day. Sometimes the left-handed batter stays on the bench against left-handed pitchers, though it’s not because Rice has trouble hitting them; his splits against lefties are even better than his results against righties.
Really, it’s a matter of Boone wanting to keep Paul Goldschmidt and Giancarlo Stanton happy. With Stanton hitting the injury list this week, Boone has one fewer rationalization to keep Rice out of the starting lineup. Still, it’s conceivable that over the full season, Rice loses a chance to win MVP because he loses at-bats to lesser players on his own team. He’s likely going to need those opportunities to stay ahead of Alvarez and Judge, and there are bound to be voters who won’t pick Rice because “How can you vote for a platoon player to be the MVP?” They would have a point.
Ohtani’s biggest competition for MVP in the NL is himself, because he’s also trying to win NL Cy Young. While still playing for the Los Angeles Angels in 2022, he came pretty close to winning MVP (second place) and Cy Young (fourth) in the same season. And while the MVP/Cy double has been done 11 times in history, it’s never been done Ohtani’s way – being the best hitter and pitcher.

Peeking back at the 2025 preseason, there were obvious cracks in the plan devised by the Raiders to give a rejuvenated Pete Carroll and last-chance (or not) quarterback Geno Smith a chance at reviving the franchise that wound up with the top pick in the 2026 draft. The same is true of the Jets, who were trying again to resuscitate Justin Fields before disarming the defense in the midst of a run of failures and injuries. Arizona? Tennessee? The Giants? Yeah, we guessed they’d be this bad.
The easiest way to make the list is doubt or a complete lack of clarity at the quarterback position.
Fast forward to the present, and it’s rather easy to project failures in team-building — or large-scale rebuilding efforts to clean up the mess of a prior regime — to cast these teams as the best candidates to be drafting at the top in 2027.
The Dolphins have an absolutely barren roster built on extremely limited foundational pieces. While they made a couple splash additions in free agency, including bridge quarterback and former Packers backup Malik Willis, they’re mostly primed for a rebuild. If Willis is not able to elevate the team above the sum of its shaky parts, the Dolphins could be a prime candidate for the first overall pick in the 2027 draft. The question becomes if they give up on Willis immediately or take one of the blue-chip edge rushers or receivers this class has on hand.

If both of them bite the injury bug, their defense is not going to be able to drag them to more than a few wins, which could result in them obtaining the number one pick. Their whole offense could use a revamp, so this might not be the worst for them, but it would be a mild surprise considering the perceived weakness of the NFC South for the last several seasons.

Sourav Kothari on Thursday said the bubble of numbness around him, following the death of his father and former World champion Manoj Kothari in January, insulated him from pressure and helped him retain his IBSF World Billiards title in Carlow, Ireland.
In a repeat of last year’s World championships final, Kothari defeated Pankaj Advani 1133-477 to defend his crown. Kothari, who was close to his father-cum-coach, described his achievement as ‘bittersweet.’
“I didn’t have any expectations. The world around me has suddenly become a little empty, I’ve just become numb. That probably helped me win this world title,” said Kothari at a virtual press conference, organised by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), on Thursday.
About his Carlow campaign, Kothari – who clinched the National title within weeks of his father’s demise – said, “It’s contrasting. Last year no one really threatened me. This year, in every match, starting from David Causier (757-498) in the quarterfinal, Dhvaj Haria (633-443) in the semis and (Advani in the) final, my opponents started with a bang. Luckily, I came from behind. In the final, Pankaj made a 167 break, and I replied with a 485 break, which took me one hour and two minutes.”

The 41-year-old Kolkata cueist said even though he missed his daily routine of neck and back exercises, he managed to pull off the crucial break. He revealed that his decision to walk from the hotel to the venue, despite wearing leather shoes and nursing a dodgy left foot, every time in the ‘crisp and pollution-free air’ of the countryside was also beneficial. “It was a good 20-minute walk. It helped me so much.”
Kothari hoped that cue sports would feature in the 2030 Commonwealth Games to be hosted by India.
“We are back in the Asian Games in 2030. Our federation, the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI), is trying to get the sport into the 2030 Commonwealth Games. We’ve won multiple gold medals at the Asian Games. It will be great, not just for our sport but also for India’s medal tally, if we are included in the Commonwealth Games,” said Kothari.

He is now under contract until June 30, 2036.
Otzelberger guided the Cyclones to their third Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament over the past five seasons in 2025-26. Iowa State finished with a 29-8 record, tying for the second-most wins in program history.
“Coach Otzelberger has elevated our men’s basketball program into a perennial NCAA Tournament and Top 25 team. This contract extension demonstrates Iowa State University’s commitment to him by making him one of the highest paid basketball coaches in the country,” athletic director Jamie Pollard said. “We are excited to reward him for the success we have enjoyed during his first five years leading the Cyclones and we look forward to continued success under his leadership.”
Iowa State has earned five straight NCAA Tournament bids under Otzelberger, who was hired in March 2021 after the program went 2-22 in 2020-21. The Cyclones are 124-53 overall in five seasons with Otzelberger at the helm.

He is now under contract until June 30, 2036.
Otzelberger guided the Cyclones to their third Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament over the past five seasons in 2025-26. Iowa State finished with a 29-8 record, tying for the second-most wins in program history.
“Coach Otzelberger has elevated our men’s basketball program into a perennial NCAA Tournament and Top 25 team. This contract extension demonstrates Iowa State University’s commitment to him by making him one of the highest paid basketball coaches in the country,” athletic director Jamie Pollard said. “We are excited to reward him for the success we have enjoyed during his first five years leading the Cyclones and we look forward to continued success under his leadership.”
Iowa State has earned five straight NCAA Tournament bids under Otzelberger, who was hired in March 2021 after the program went 2-22 in 2020-21. The Cyclones are 124-53 overall in five seasons with Otzelberger at the helm.

Cristian Chivu’s side has a 10-point lead over second-placed Napoli and is 12 points ahead of AC Milan, with four rounds remaining.
A home win against Parma on Sunday night would guarantee Inter the title. A point could also be enough, depending on the results of Napoli and Milan.
But Inter could seal the title even before kick-off at San Siro if Napoli loses at Champions League-chasing Como on Saturday and Milan fails to beat Sassuolo about four hours before Inter’s match.
It would be a first managerial trophy for Chivu, whose only previous senior coaching experience before the Inter job was a 13-match spell in charge of Parma at the end of last season.
Inter could also win the league and cup double as it faces Lazio in the Italian Cup final on May 13.
