Avengers: Doomsday doubles Deadpool & Wolverine’s first-day ticket sales

Yesterday, Marvel Studios finally unleashed the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, coinciding with the official launch of ticket sales. As expected, the hugely anticipated blockbuster is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of the year—if not the biggest—and its first-day sales are already pointing in that direction.

According to Variety, Avengers: Doomsday generated an impressive $16.5 million in advance ticket sales during its first day of availability.

Twice as Much as Deadpool & Wolverine

Doomsday’s first-day pre-sales were twice as high as those for Marvel’s last major success, Deadpool & Wolverine, which went on to gross more than $1.3 billion worldwide.

That comparison becomes even more impressive when you consider that Deadpool & Wolverine tickets were available across all formats and screens. Tickets for Doomsday, meanwhile, were initially limited to premium formats at just 1,000 domestic theaters.

When Doomsday opens later this year, it will be playing on more than 4,000 screens across North America. According to studio insiders, premium-format showtimes on December 17 and December 18 are already largely sold out, prompting exhibitors to add more screenings for Christmas Day and beyond.

The Doomsday Trailer Was Also a Big Success

The trailer has also been a monster success, racking up 503 million views during its first 24 hours.

That’s certainly impressive, although it wasn’t quite enough to claim the record for the biggest movie trailer launch of all time. That honour still belongs to Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which debuted with 719 million views.

However, Doomsday is now Disney’s most-viewed trailer ever, surpassing the Deadpool & Wolverine Super Bowl teaser, which generated 365 million views, including its television broadcast.

Doomsday at Comic-Con

Marvel Studios is returning to San Diego Comic-Con this year for a major Hall H presentation, and it’s safe to assume that Avengers: Doomsday will be one of the panel’s biggest attractions.

The presentation will take place on July 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. PT. We’ll be covering the convention, so be sure to check back with JoBlo for all the biggest announcements and developments.

Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18.
