The DC Universe is bringing a big spotlight on the Green Lantern Corps that may go beyond 2026.
Lanterns, which will be the next major DC Studios TV show in James Gunn’s franchise, is only a few months away from its launch. However, rumors about a big change for season 2 have already been confirmed, as Christopher Cantwell is officially joining the creative team. Check out his statement below:
The InSneider recently reported that Cantwell had joined the Lanterns TV show for season 2 as a writer and executive producer. His body of work includes co-creating the Halt and Catch Fire series, along with executive producing the Paper Girls adaptation.
At the time of this story’s publication, HBO, Warner Bros. TV, and DC Studios have not confirmed Lanterns season 2 is happening. A renewal or cancellation of the show’s fate beyond season 2 has not been made yet.
However, it’s not impossible that development for a potential Lanterns season 2 has begun before season 1’s launch. It’s common for studios and networks to quietly work on plans for a hypothetical next season before an actual renewal has happened.
Developing scripts for Lanterns season 2 will also allow production to start faster if/when a renewal comes from HBO. That also means filming can kick off a lot sooner, which in turn can make it easier for the series to come back in 2027.
The original report has also stated that executive producers Damon Lindelof and Tom King are expected to have less involvement in Lanterns season 2, due to their commitments to other projects. However, that has not been confirmed by DC Studios, HBO, and Warner Bros. TV.
Cantwell’s official addition is also promising, as he has a background in the world of comics, having worked both on DC and Marvel titles. Having a TV writer with comic book experience enter the DCU series will also continue the trend of Lanterns season 1 through King’s involvement.
Chris Mundy, who is the showrunner, has also recently been on the record that Lanterns season 2 is very possible. According to the Ozark creators, they constructed the series with the intention of running for multiple seasons, which makes Cantwell’s hiring fitting and timely.
The DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” is already showing signs of its investment with Lanterns in the larger franchise. Aaron Pierre, who will play John Stewart in the HBO series, will be reprising the role of the famous Green Lantern in 2027’s Man of Tomorrow.
If Lanterns season 2 moves forward, it will most likely continue John’s progression as he becomes the primary Green Lantern in the DCU. The cast will also probably pull in more Emerald Knights from the deeper lore, which gives the series a chance for additional layers.
Depending on how Lanterns season 1 is received and performs, HBO will likely hand out a season 2 renewal before 2026 is over. Whether that will happen before, during, or after the airing of season 1 remains to be seen, though.
Lanterns is officially set to premiere on Sunday, August 16, on HBO and will also stream on HBO Max.
