Already down Luka Doncic, the Los Angeles Lakers visit the Boston Celtics on Friday night without LeBron James.

The Lakers ruled James out with sciatica, the same issue that has limited him to just six of the team’s 21 games this season. He also is dealing with a left foot injury.

Doncic is in Slovenia for the birth of his second child. Lakers guard Marcus Smart, who began his career in Boston, was also ruled out because of a left lumbar muscle strain.

Los Angeles earned a 123-120 road win over the Toronto Raptors on Thursday when James assisted on Rui Hachimura’s 3-pointer at the buzzer.

James scored eight points in the game, the first time since 2007 that he didn’t score at least 10, ending a streak of 1,297 games in which he reached double figures. He shot 4 of 17 from the field and missed each of his five 3-point attempts.

James expressed no regrets about deciding to pass at the end rather than shoot in an attempt to win the game and extend the streak. In the end, Hachimura was the hero even over teammate Austin Reaves, who logged 44 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

“Just playing the game the right way,” James said. “You always make the right play. That’s just been my M.O. That’s how I was taught the game. I’ve done that my whole career. …

“Once they doubled (Reaves) and the ball got swung to me, I knew it was a numbers game. We had a 4-on-3 advantage, and I was just trying to put the ball on time on target.”

Punjab Kings remained unbeaten and retained its top spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) standings with a commanding 54-run win over Lucknow Super Giants at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium here on Sunday. 

The host’s bowlers rose in unison to defend a mammoth 254, this season’s highest total, which was set up by Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly’s blistering 182-run partnership off 80 balls for the second wicket.

The Super Giants were cruising at 61 for no loss in the sixth over, with Ayush Badoni’s promotion as opener reaping dividends, before Vijaykumar Vyshak dismissed him off the last ball of the PowerPlay.

Rishabh Pant’s consecutive sixes off Marco Jansen in the following over, including a trademark one-handed swing that cleared long-on, kept Super Giants’ hopes afloat.

The New York Giants have traded three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals for the No. 10 pick overall in Thursday’s draft, according to multiple reports on Saturday night.

Lawrence, 28, requested a trade last week and did not report to the Giants’ offseason program, with reports that discussions over a contract extension had reached an impasse.

The Giants have their original first-round pick at No. 5 and now No. 10.


NFL Network reported on Saturday that the Bengals will be giving Lawrence a contract extension. He is set to earn a base salary of $18.5 million in 2026 and is under contract through 2027 but with no guaranteed money remaining.

A 2019 first-round pick (17th overall) out of Clemson, Lawrence has recorded 341 tackles, 30.5 sacks and 103 quarterback hits in 109 games (102 starts) over seven seasons in New York.

He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2022 through 2024, but not last season when he started 17 games and had 31 tackles, 0.5 sacks, four tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits and one interception.

Cincinnati already added to its defensive line with offseason signings of former Seahawks edge rusher Boye Mafe to a three-year, $60 million contract and former Vikings tackle Jonathan Allen to a two-year, $25 million deal.
