First Look Teaser for ‘Our Effed Up World’ Alien Invasion Sci-Fi Horror

“There’s still plenty of mysterious out there.” Dark Star Pictures has unveiled the first teaser trailer for an indie sci-fi horror film called Our Effed Up World, the latest creation from young trans filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay (also of T Blockers, Satranic Panic, The Serpent’s Skin). This is playing soon at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal this summer, but has no final release date yet. Fantasia’s intro is the best for this: “With her latest film, Our Effed Up World, Mackay takes inspiration from the alien-invasion genre. As Sheri grapples with the loss of her grandmother, a mysterious entity crashes in the woods nearby. Soon only Sheri & her friends stand between the survival of the world and an alien hunger that will consume us all. Paying homage to films like Killer Klowns from Outer Space and cutesy girl-power vibes of The Powerpuff Girls, Mackay’s sense of humour is absurd, biting, and fun.” Starring Sara Thompson, Annapurna Sriram, Jess McLeod, Scott Major, Brandon Flynn, Jordan Dulieu, Jack Haven, Leela Varghese, Chris Gun, and Tommy Dorfman. Our Effed Up World follows Sheri, who thought her biggest problem in life was dealing with the recent loss of her beloved grandma. But when a mysterious entity crash lands in the woods, only she and her group of s*!tkicker friends stand in the way of an insatiable, intergalactic hunger. Our Effed Up World is directed by young Australian genre filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay, director of the films T Blockers, Satranic Panic, Carnage for Christmas, The Serpent’s Skin, & more. The screenplay is written by Alice Maio Mackay & Ben Pahl Robinson. Produced by Alice Maio Mackay and Jane Schoenbrun. This initially premiered at the 2026 Frameline Film Festival earlier this year and it’s also playing at the Fantasia Film Festival next this summer.
