George R.R. Martin has long been an outspoken fan of one of Prime Video’s most acclaimed sci-fi dramas. Following its world premiere in December 2015, the A Song of Ice and Fire author praised the adaptation on his personal blog, Not a Blog, writing, “This is the show that fandom has been waiting for since Firefly and Battlestar Galactica left the air… a real kickass spaceship show, done right.” His admiration actually predates the TV series, having previously described the source novels as a “kickass space opera,” a quote that was later featured on the cover of one of the books.
Few sci-fi titles have earned such enthusiastic praise from Martin, and that series is The Expanse. The reputable novelist even publicly backed fan campaigns to save the show after Syfy cancelled it in May 2018. Fortunately, Amazon stepped in, with Prime Video reviving the masterpiece for three more seasons and allowing it to reach its planned conclusion. Based on James S. A. Corey‘s bestselling novels, The Expanse premiered on Syfy on December 14, 2015, to widespread critical acclaim. Despite its strong reviews, the network canceled it after three seasons before Amazon rescued it not long after. The drama ultimately concluded with its sixth and final season on January 14, 2022.
Is George R.R. Martin’s Favorite “Kickass Spaceship Show” Worth Watching?
Over a decade after its debut, The Expanse is once again attracting attention on streaming and digital platforms. The sci-fi adaptation is currently among the most popular TV titles on the Apple TV Store in the U.S., ranking among the platform’s top performers this week. It has also seen renewed interest in Australia, where it ranks among the top 10 titles overall on SBS On Demand.
Holding an impressive 95% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, The Expanse is set several centuries in the future, when humanity has colonized the Solar System. Earth, Mars, and the inhabitants of the Asteroid Belt exist in a fragile political balance, with tensions between Earth and the now-independent Martian Congressional Republic threatening to erupt into war. Against this backdrop, a hardened detective, Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane), and a rogue ship’s captain, James Holden (Steven Strait), become entangled in the disappearance of a young woman. Their investigation uncovers a conspiracy that could alter the future of humanity.
The Expanse is available to purchase through the Apple TV Store.
