This year’s San Diego Comic-Con celebration is beaming up with a spotlight on the Star Trek Universe! After eager fans of the time-honored sci-fi franchise gathered to hear the latest updates and announcements, Karim Diané revealed Ruaridh Aldington is joining Season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as a series regular! He’ll play Keats, a young alien our cadets encounter on an away mission who possesses a mysterious backstory. According to JoBlo’s Mike Conway, who’s attending this evening’s panel, an upcoming storyline involves cadets making the risky decision to bring him back to Starfleet Academy, where they realize he’s a wanted man, and his life is in danger.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy takes place in the 32nd century, the same era as Star Trek: Discovery, and “introduces viewers to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”
George Takei reflects on 60 years of Star Trek
During the panel, legendary Star Trek actor George Takei, who played the skilled starship helmsman, Hikaru Sulu, in the original series, joined others on stage. To help celebrate the franchise’s 60th anniversary, Takei shared some inspiring words about Star Trek as a universe of entertainment and how it’s brought people together for several generations, saying, “It’s always nice to have people say congratulations on the 60th anniversary. It makes me feel so young,” Takei joked. “I’m way older than 60, but that isn’t the only wonderful thing about this. It’s an extraordinary phenomenon. What television series that was low-rated when we first started—not only lasted three seasons and was canceled, but because of people like you,” Takei said, gesturing toward the packed room, “and your parents, and your grandparents… because of their intelligence, sensitivity, and vision, supported Star Trek and have lived long and endured for sixty years. That is an extraordinary phenomenon.”
Michelle Hurd on what makes Star Trek special
Shortly after Takei’s sentiments, he and Michelle Hurd, who plays Blinsspot in Star Trek: Picard, shared a powerful moment. While addressing Takei, Hurd told the Star Trek icon she was honored to be sitting next to him. The two then spoke about one of the franchise’s most powerful aspects: inclusion. “This is what Star Trek has done,” Hurd said. “It touches us, it brings us together—it’s literally the lifeline that will heal us all. It’s what we want to do, what we want this world to be. It’s the hope for tomorrow. It’s diversity, equality, and inclusion—those beautiful three words. I’m so grateful for this. I’m so grateful to be a part of this family. Let’s say fuck you to fear and hatred. Let’s lean into love.”
What’s next for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4?
During the panel, co-showrunner and executive producer of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Akiva Goldsman, let the crowd know what’s in store for Season 4, after launching its first episode this Thursday.
In season four, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise – led by Captain Christopher Pike – continues to journey to strange new worlds, battling inner demons and external threats, and encounters familiar and terrifying faces. According to a report by Deadline, this season, myriad big genre swings put the crew in western, horror, disaster-movie, and literally puppet set-ups and backgrounds. Also, La’an continues her cutesy relationship with Spock, while Pike manages a post-Batel world. Scotty and Oregas are beginning to see a relationship gain some footing.
