Grey’s Anatomy Is Returning For Season 23 – Everything We Know

The future looks interesting for the people at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Grey’s Anatomy season 23. ABC’s true legacy series created by Shonda Rhimes is one of the longest-running series on network TV. It has transformed and evolved multiple times throughout its over two-decade history on broadcast, with the 2025-2026 TV cycle featured a couple of big milestones, including crossing the 450th episode — a rare feat to achieve, considering the trends in the industry.

Very few shows have a legacy that Grey’s Anatomy has. It’s arguably one of, if not the quintessential medical procedural of the 21st century. Grey’s Anatomy season 22 has continued to shift towards a brand new era of storytelling that will hopefully propel it for the next decade. As classic characters like Meredith, Bailey, and Webber maintain their place as its foundation, the show has also started to develop a new generation of characters that viewers can invest in.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 23 Is Officially Confirmed By ABC

A few months before the TV cycle entered its final stretch, news about renewals and cancellations started trickling in. CBS led the pack by confirming its fall 2026 schedule ahead of its peers, with both ABC and NBC still have a few shows left in the bubble. Luckily for the medical series, Grey’s Anatomy season 23 was confirmed as early as the end of March 30, 2026. This not only assured viewers that the project is returning the next cycle, but also allowed the writers to come up with a season 22 finale without the fear of not being able to resolve any lingering cliffhanger.

While not as big on live ratings as it once was, ABC had several factors to consider when renewing Grey’s Anatomy. Firstly, it’s the network’s longest-running scripted series, making it somewhat at the same level as CBS’s NCIS and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order. Secondly, Grey’s Anatomy remains to be very popular on streaming.

Currently, ABC has yet to lock its 2026-2027 schedule, as it hasn’t decided on the fate of some of its existing shows. This means that Grey’s Anatomy season 23’s premiere is still up in the air. Looking back at the show and network’s history, however, there’s a good chance that Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital will open its doors again sometime in the upcoming fall, which has been the case for the series for most of its run. This means that Grey’s Anatomy season 23 will likely debut between late September to early October.

What Grey’s Anatomy Season 23’s Story Will Be

Grey’s Anatomy season 23 will start with two voids that may never be filled, as both Teddy Altman and Owen Hunt officially leaves the Seattle-based hospital. Aside from their collective and individual personal stories, their contributions to the establishment have been vital to the medical aspect of the procedural. It has been a while since the series lost long-running characters, so their departure will definitely have major ramifications in Grey’s Anatomy season 23.

ABC Officially Marks The End Of An Era For Grey’s Anatomy

A game-changing update from ABC officially marks the end of an era for network TV’s legacy medical series — Shonda Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy.

As Grey’s Anatomy starts to rebuild following their departures, expect, however, that the divisive extended absences from some characters trend will continue into the next year. This has been part of ABC’s attempt at cost-cutting — something that the majority of long-running procedurals have also been doing for a couple of years now. Hopefully, however, the next batch isn’t as disruptive as the previous ones.
