Hayden Panettiere is ready to close the book on her relationship with ex Brian Hickerson — even if he’s holding out hope for marriage.
“I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Panettiere, 36, told TMZ on Wednesday, May 13, when asked about whether she wants to marry Hickerson, 37, some day in the future.
Panettiere also let out a laugh when the subject of walking down the aisle with her abusive ex-boyfriend was discussed.
“It’s [not] gonna happen,” she added as she headed into the terminal at Los Angeles International Airport.
Panettiere’s candid comments came hours after TMZ reported that Hickerson hadn’t ruled out a happily ever after for him and the Heroes actress, despite their toxic relationship and inevitable split.
“I hope so, [but] she probably doesn’t think the same way,” Hickerson told TMZ on Wednesday when asked about the possibility of a reconciliation and eventual marriage between him and Panettiere. “I think Hayden is one of most talented people I’ve ever met in my life, and I would be an idiot not to walk away from her and let her flourish in her career.”
He added that he “of course” thinks about them getting hitched, but admitted that he and Panettiere “probably wouldn’t be good together” if they got back together.
Panettiere was first romantically linked to Hickerson in 2018. The next year, their relationship hit a snag when Hickerson was arrested for an alleged domestic violence incident involving the actress.
Hickerson was charged with felony domestic violence and ordered to stay away from the Nashville alum. The charges were later dropped.
In 2020, Hickerson was arrested again for another alleged domestic violence altercation with Panettiere. He pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend in 2021 and the remaining six counts, which include battery, assault with a deadly weapon and dissuading a witness, were dismissed.
Hickerson was sentenced to 45 days in county jail, but was credited for 12 days. He eventually served 33 days in jail and was placed on four years of probation. He was also ordered to pay a $500 fine.
Panettiere and Hickerson broke up after the second domestic violence incident. She discussed the event in her upcoming memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, published on Tuesday, May 19.
“It was brutal. It was traumatic. It was emotional. It was important for me to word that experience properly,” Panettiere exclusively told Us Weekly in her recent cover story, noting that she hopes being open about that traumatic experience will give others strength to leave an abusive situation.
Panettiere explained, “I needed to believe that it happened for a reason. For something so horrible to happen, the only thing that I could think of to make it all worth it, was [to] let people know that they’re not alone and help people.”
She noted, “[I’m] making sure that the people that have gone through similar things, don’t feel like they’re alone, and don’t feel like nobody understands them and knows that there’s somebody out there who went through it. And even though it took her years to truly get herself out of the situation, it’s possible. You can do it.”
