Even before It: Welcome to Derry ended near the end of last year, viewers were wanting more from the show. HBO’s radio silence on another season has been notable in recent weeks, and according to boss Casey Bloys, that silence is intentional in the right way.
In a recent Deadline interview, Bloys revealed Derry is “not in limbo at all,” and that he’d “happily” greenlight another season. “[Co-creators] Andy and Barbara Muschietti are hard at work trying to come up with an idea for a story they’d want to tell for another season. […] One of the challenges is, there’s not a book that you’re basing it on, so it’s invention. They want to make sure that they have a story they’re excited to tell.”
The Welcome to Derry finale established that Pennywise exists at all points in time, meaning he could “travel” to the past to kill ancestors of the 1989 and 1962 kids who defeat him. Andy Muschietti said before that he believed the show could have a three-season arc that’d wind the clock back to the 1930s and 1900s. That idea is further backed up by scenes from the show’s intro sequence and a handful of moments spread throughout the first season.
So make no mistake, Bloys and HBO will “be there” to greenlight more Derry when the time comes. It’ll just happen if and only if the Muschiettis think the story is worth putting on screen.
