Fashion’s most anticipated night of the year is almost here, and honestly, we can barely contain ourselves. The 2026 Met Gala is set to take place on Monday, May 4th, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and as always, the buildup since the announcement of the theme is half the fun.

Every year, we find ourselves doing the same thing: imagining what we’d love to see on those iconic steps before the actual red carpet rolls out. It’s a bit of a tradition here. Part wishful thinking, part informed gut feeling. So with less than three weeks to go, we’re sharing our red carpet wishlist, and this year, the theme gives us a lot to dream about.

The 2026 Met Gala theme is “Costume Art,” centered on the exhibition of the same name curated by the Costume Institute’s Andrew Bolton. The corresponding dress code, “Fashion Is Art,” invites attendees to consider how designers use the body as their blank canvas. As Bolton himself has described it, fashion is the common thread running through the museum’s entire collection, connecting every curatorial department, every gallery, and roughly 5,000 years of art history. It’s a broad, rich concept, and that breadth is exactly what makes it so exciting from a fashion standpoint.

The exhibition, which opens May 10th and runs through January 2027, will also debut the Met’s new nearly 12,000-square-foot Condé M. Nast Galleries. The theme explores three loose manifestations of the body in art: the classical ideal, the anatomical interior, and the historically underrepresented; aging, pregnant, altered bodies that challenge centuries of narrow beauty standards. It’s fashion being asked to reckon with the body, in all its complexity. Taken seriously, this could produce some of the most intellectually compelling red carpet moments we’ve ever seen.

The Co-Chairs Who Have Our Full Attention

This year’s co-chairs are nothing short of spectacular: Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and perennial chair Anna Wintour. Beyoncé is returning for her first Met Gala appearance since 2016, which alone is enough to send the internet into full meltdown mode. With that kind of cultural weight, paired with a theme this substantive, the pressure to deliver is immense. And we have every reason to believe they will.

Here’s where we let our imagination run.

Beyoncé: The Body as Monument

For Beyoncé, we’d love to see something that engages directly with the “classical and nude” thread of the exhibition; the tradition of idealized form, wet drapery, and the body as sculpture. Think a Thierry Mugler archival moment, or something newly commissioned in that vein: structured, body-conscious, and unmistakably intentional. Given the fan-wide prediction that her appearance at the Met Gala will launch her Act III era, there’s also a compelling case for subverting expectations entirely, showing up in something that borrows from Rock n Roll iconography and reframes it through the lens of high art.

What we’d genuinely love, though, is for her to lean into the Schiaparelli body-molding universe. The label’s anatomical work; pieces that reference musculature, internal structure, and the body beneath, feels perfectly aligned with the “anatomical” thread running through this year’s exhibition. It would be conceptually on point, visually arresting, and quintessentially Beyoncé.

Nicole Kidman: Baroque Grandeur

Nicole Kidman has never been afraid of the theatrical, and the Rococo and Baroque movements feel tailor-made for her. Imagine her in something pulled from the Christian Lacroix archive: sumptuous fabric, exaggerated silhouette. It’s the kind of regal drama that makes you feel like you’re looking at a painting come to life. That’s not a stretch for her; it’s practically her comfort zone.

Alternatively, there’s a compelling case for a more contemporary interpretation. Dilara Findikoglu’s nod to Sandro Botticelli , referenced in discussions around this year’s exhibition, has the visual language to translate beautifully on Kidman. Her bone structure and willingness to commit to a look make her one of the most reliable co-chairs the Met Gala has ever had.

Venus Williams: Power, Structure, and the Underrepresented Body

Venus Williams’ presence as co-chair feels deeply meaningful in the context of this theme. The “Costume Art” exhibition specifically addresses the underrepresented body: the athletic, the powerful, the body that has historically been erased from the classical beauty canon. Venus, as a Black woman athlete who has spent her career navigating that erasure, could make one of the most personal and powerful statements of the night simply by choosing the right garment.

We’d love to see her in something that engages with skewed proportions: the Comme des Garçons “lumps and bumps” tradition, for instance, or a more recent architectural silhouette from Thom Browne. Something that disrupts expectation, honors the body’s strength, and refuses to conform to a single narrow ideal. That, to us, would be the most fitting interpretation of everything “Costume Art” is trying to say.

Fashion Belongs in the Art World

What makes this year especially exciting is that the theme resists easy interpretation. Fashion belongs in the art world, not despite the body, but because of it. The best looks on that carpet won’t be the most elaborate or the most expensive. They’ll be the ones that feel like they’re in a genuine conversation with the history this exhibition is tracing.

Moreover, the Met Gala has never raised more money than it did in 2025, a record-breaking $31 million, and this year arrives with even greater star power. With a theme this intellectually alive, we’re hoping the fashion matches the moment. We suspect it will.
