Unlike his normal process, Tony Stark doesn’t get the luxury of choice when he is stranded one million years in the past, stripped of his tech empire, and left with only the shell of his armor in a prehistoric cave. It’s here that Iron Man faces a problem even genius can’t out-invent: a dying power supply. But when the battery runs dry, Tony doesn’t just lose his suit. He loses his former identity, to forge a brand new one.

What follows is the birth of “Ice Age Man,” a desperate (and utterly absurd) reinvention, forged from crude materials and stubbornness. Readers can (and will) argue over the science, the logic, and physics of Tony’s new suit, not to mention whether icicles make for credible weapons. But then, plausibility isn’t the point. When Doom and Stark (obviously) come to blows, Tony is forced to contend with the might of Excalibur itself. Thankfully, it doesn’t take much for Tony Stark to prove he’s a worthy hero, soon catching the attention of Merlin himself. While Doom claims the sword of King Arthur, Iron Man is granted the scabbard of the same weapon, absorbing into his armor for a drastic re-imagining. A tech/medieval appearance is the lesser change, unlocking impossible new magical abilities that elevated Stark from an armored warrior to legitimate, Green Lantern-level construct creator.

One could argue that almost all of Iron Man’s armors qualify as ‘Transformers’ in their abilties, changing shape or design based on specific attacks or needs. But nothing can compare to the issue of Tony Stark: Iron Man which begins with a picturesque, romantic date between Stark and Wasp, traveling via Vespa scooter. A nostalgic mode of transport that unveils a whole other purpose once a nearby dating app starts spawning an army of deranged love-robots… forcing Tony to suit up.

Instead of just riding the scooter into combat, the vehicle becomes a new suit of Iron Man armor in seconds. Defying the cuteness factor of the name, Iron Man’s ‘scooter’ armor is guaranteed to put a smile on any fan’s face, while also debuting a design as meticulous and compelling as any Stark has created on his usual, humanoid design philosophy.

There are few reboots or relaunches as notorious as the Heroes Reborn reality of 1990s Marvel Comics. With the only real demands or guidance at the time being a dramatic, edgy, even risky redesign, no Avenger was untouched. But Iron Man might have gotten the worst deal of all the heroes, with “The Crossing” storyline turning Tony into a villain, dying, and being replaced by his college-aged variant of Earth-96020. And with a new Iron Man, came new iron nipples. Yes, really.

When the new Tony debuted in Iron Man #331, two design tweaks stole the spotlight. Technically, the armor’s infamous nut-nipples first appeared on the cover of Iron Man #330, but the art team was still too scared to reveal the new armor in all its anatomically-correct glory. A change made for all of Iron Man’s arsenal of stored suits, no less.

The One ‘Random’ Armor That Demands More Attention

As painful as it is to admit Iron Man’s Dragon Slayer armor never turned out to be the “game changer” design idea it should have been.While the majority of the suit is the standard design and color scheme, the enemy forces of Carnage Reigns Omega #1 demand a highly-specialized (and ultimately strange) adjustment. For either psychological or physical benefit, the armored shoulders and new helmet scream ‘fantasy dragon slayer,’ with weapons to back up the claim.

Outfitted with sonic weaponry needed to fight and kill symbiotes like Venom, Carnage, and more hostile hosts, the idea of a symbiote-slaughtering Iron Man armor is unique enough on its own. But once Tony deployed the suit’s hard-light sword and shield, transforming him from hero to monster hunter, the suit cemented its place among Tony’s most indulgent, but coolest, designs ever.
