Season 6 of The Chosen will bring one of the Bible’s most infamous stories to life when it depicts the crucifixion of Jonathan Roumie’s Jesus. It’s going to be an incredibly dark and heavy sequence for the creative team behind the Dallas Jenkins-created series to film, and it’s a task they’re quickly approaching, with Jenkins recently telling Crosswalk Headlines that the iconic part of the story will be shot “in the next two weeks.” The chapters of the Bible reveal a scene straight out of a horror film, with nails piercing flesh, a crown of thorns, and blood everywhere.
“It’s not family-friendly,” Jenkins said, pushing away any fears that fans might have of the show taking a different avenue from what went down in the source material. But, that’s been the plan from the start, as Jenkins added, “I don’t think the crucifixion was. I don’t think we’d be doing an authentic betrayal if we tried to clean it up.”
Many movies like Norman Jewison’s Jesus Christ Superstar and Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ have depicted the crucifixion, but the title that sticks out in most people’s minds for one reason or another is Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. Comparing The Chosen’s version to Gibson’s, Jenkins continued,
“We have different tools in our toolbox than what Mel Gibson had. We’ve had five seasons of emotional connection, and so when you get to the crucifixion, I don’t need to do a lot of physicality and violence to get the point across. So we’ll still do some of that, but it won’t be quite as explicit as Mel’s.”
Dallas Jenkins and Co. Are Working Hard on Season 6
In addition to the dark subject matter of the upcoming season, filming itself is literally in the dark, as Jenkins recently revealed,
“Most of it is at night. So, it means we’re shooting all through the night. It’s exhausting. This season is an 86-day shoot. It’s almost 20 days longer than any other season we’ve ever done. It’s the physical challenges, the logistical challenges that make it even harder.”
Given that the sixth and seventh seasons include two of the most famous stories from the Bible, the team is doing everything they can to get it right. With two feature-length episodes that will receive theatrical releases on the way, it’s no wonder that the team is feeling the pressure.
Season 5 of The Chosen arrives on Prime Video later this month.
