Jaeger-LeCoultre Names IU as Its Newest Global Ambassador

Eighteen years is a long time to earn a title. IU, born Lee Ji-eun, has collected several over the course of her career. Nation’s Little Sister. Nation’s Sweetheart. Nation’s Daughter. Each one reflects something about how South Korea has grown up alongside her, from her debut at 15 to her current position as one of the most versatile and widely respected creative forces in Korean entertainment. On July 7, 2026, she added one more. Jaeger-LeCoultre announced IU as its newest Global Ambassador, the first Korean artist to hold the title for the Swiss Maison.

She joins a roster that includes Lenny Kravitz, Nicholas Hoult, Kim Woo-Bin, Jackson Yee, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Zhang Ziyi. It is a considered list. JLC does not appoint ambassadors for reach alone. The partnership was revealed through the Maison’s intimate interview series, “The Hour Before,” which places its subjects in a moment of quiet anticipation, the space before performance begins, when everything has been prepared but nothing has yet been given to an audience. For IU, that framing could not have been more precisely chosen.

Why IU and Jaeger-LeCoultre Make Sense Together

The connection between IU and JLC did not begin with a brand proposal. It began with a gift. Before any formal partnership existed, she had already turned to Jaeger-LeCoultre when she wanted to give something genuinely meaningful to someone she deeply appreciated. A boutique staff member’s handwritten note accompanied the piece: “A beautiful watch brings beautiful time to its owner.” A few days later, she received an invitation to join the Maison as an ambassador. She described the timing as feeling surreal.

That kind of organic origin matters in a partnership built around authenticity. IU’s creative philosophy and JLC’s approach to watchmaking share a specific quality: both are defined by restraint as a form of courage rather than a form of limitation. “I think restraint is actually very difficult,” she said in The Hour Before interview. “In some ways, I think it takes the greatest courage. It may even require more courage than showing everything.” That is not a statement most celebrities make about luxury goods. It is a statement about craft. JLC CEO Jérôme Lambert recognised it immediately, noting that her authenticity, dedication, and quiet elegance resonate deeply with the values of the Maison.

The Reverso and What IU Sees in It

The watch at the center of the partnership is the Reverso. Born in 1931 for British polo players in India who needed a case that could flip to protect the crystal during play. The Reverso has become one of the most architecturally distinctive watches in fine horology, defined by its Art Deco lines, its rectangular case, and the mechanism that allows the dial to swivel and reveal a blank caseback that can be engraved. It is a watch built on the idea that something can have two sides and be more complete for it.

IU’s connection to that concept runs deeper than aesthetics. Her career has always operated across registers, music and acting, public warmth and private anxiety, effortless performance and years of rigorous preparation behind it. “Anyone who looks good in a Reverso is cool,” she said in the interview, with a directness that is characteristic of how she speaks about the things she genuinely loves. She was drawn to the watch long before the partnership existed, and the campaign imagery, shot with the Reverso Tribute Monoface and the Reverso Duetto Classic, reflects that ease.

“The Hour Before” asks its subjects a specific question: What does the moment before everything begins mean to you? IU’s answer says something about how she has sustained a career that many assumed would plateau long ago. “The lights haven’t come on yet, there is no applause, and I don’t know what the outcome will be,” she said. “It’s a moment when I’m completely alone in my own world. It can be uncomfortable and full of uncertainty, but it’s also incredibly exciting: as long as I have no regrets about the time and effort I’ve put in.”

She speaks about her work the way JLC’s master watchmakers speak about their movements. The effort is invisible in the finished object. It is present in the result. “Looking back on my work, I can’t deny that the time, thought, and effort behind a piece inevitably reveal themselves in the final result,” she said. “And more than anyone else, the person who knows exactly how much effort went into something is the creator or performer themselves.”

That is not a talking point. It is a conviction she has held for eighteen years, across thousands of performances, two acting careers, and a discography that has shaped what Korean pop music can sound like at its most considered. Jaeger-LeCoultre found exactly the right person.
