James Cameron wants to make a movie with Robert Rodriguez which they would shoot in just 17 days

James Cameron has spent a massive amount of time working on the Avatar movies over the last 30 years, but it seems he’d like to try something with a much quicker schedule, similar to how his buddy Robert Rodriguez works. And apparently, Cameron and Rodriguez are considering an extremely fast-paced project that would be the opposite of the years-long Avatar model.

James Cameron & Robert Rodriguez

While speaking on the Empire podcast (via The Playlist) for his new 3D concert documentary, Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour, Cameron teased that he’s working on something with Rodriguez.

Robert Rodriguez and I are talking about doing something that’s so blindingly fast that, you know, we’re just going to do the whole thing in like 17 days,” Cameron said. “Because I really like the experience on ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft.’ I shot a whole movie in six days. I’m like, what the f*** takes four years?

Rodriguez is no stranger to working quickly. Since the release of Titanic in 1997, Cameron has released three movies (not counting documentaries), and Rodriguez has released…18. There are no details on what this project could be, but it would be interesting to see what Cameron could do under an accelerated schedule.

The Future of Avatar

Avatar: Fire and Ash underperformed at the box office, which is a wild thing to say about a movie that grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide. But when you consider that the original Avatar earned $2.9 billion globally and The Way of Water brought in $2.3 billion, the decline is very noticeable.

Although Cameron certainly has plans for Avatar 4 and 5 and has even filmed portions of them, he said he wouldn’t leave fans hanging if the franchise ends with Fire and Ash. “I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does,” said Cameron earlier this year. “But, you know, we prove that business case every time we go out… If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference and I’ll tell you what we were gonna do. How’s that?

The Avatar films are a lot of fun, but I, and many others, would love to see Cameron step outside that world. He does have several other projects in the works, such as Ghosts of Hiroshima, The Devils, and a new Terminator film, but I just hope we get to see them.
