S.W.A.T. star Jay Harrington is breaking his silence about being passed over when it comes to the casting for S.W.A.T. EXILES.

S.W.A.T. came to an end on CBS after eight seasons and it was recently announced that a spin-off is in production through Sony Pictures Television. While Daniel Harrison (Shemar Moore) will be leading the spin-off series, Jay will not be returning as David Kay.

According to an interview with TVLine, this news came as much of a surprise to Jay as it did to the viewers.

“I did not have a spin-off on my bingo card,” Jay told TVLine about the S.W.A.T. EXILES announcement. The 53-year-old actor went on to say that he found out about the spin-off series being announced through a text message from his former co-star Shemar.

In the interview, Jay said, “I’ve been in this business for a long time. You don’t get ‘owed’ things just because you put in your time. If that’s the route they’re going to go, I wish it success. It’s just a fine line between ‘owed’ and ‘just let me know,” for the studio just to say, ‘Hey, this is what we’re thinking…. It’s a new idea, but this is the route we gotta go, and unfortunately the way it’s structured, we want to make a clean break, start fresh.’ Well, what do you say to that? ‘OK, well, good luck!’ So if there was any disappointment, it’s that when they announced it, we weren’t mentioned at all. That was it. And it was short-lived because I thought, ‘I’m not going to let that take away from what I know in my heart is eight years of putting in some great work.’”

While their characters on S.W.A.T. butted heads often, Jay said there are no hard feelings between himself and Shemar over this casting decision. He told the publication, “We’ve been brothers for years, so that doesn’t change.”

On whether or not he would consider making an appearance on the new spin-off, Jay told TVLine, “You know, you never say never, you never close any doors. I’d be interested to see if that’s the direction they go.”

Shemar recently addressed his former co-stars that won’t be joining the spin-off.
