Before Project Hail Mary became a sensation, Apple Films’ biggest hit was last year’s Brad Pitt racing film, F1, from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski. The IMAX experience especially was a format that put audiences in right in the action and since the movie’s box office success (and Academy Award nomination), producer Jerry Bruckheimer has been hoping to get a sequel moving. Bruckheimer said he was “surprised” but thrilled by the recognition. “It was a long journey to get the movie made because we had to endure a couple of strikes – but in the end, the movie entertained audiences around the world,” he said. “I never worked with Brad Pitt before and it’s really a thrill to work with Brad.“

According to The Hollywood Reporter, both Bruckheimer and Apple senior VP of services, Eddie Cue, talked about the future of Apple Films when Cue was honored with the Cannes Lions Entertainment Person of the Year for 2026. Bruckheimer teased to an audience that he and Joseph Kosinski are “going to come back and hopefully make another F1.” Cue would then add,

We’re going to do it again. Hopefully, we’re doing another Formula 1 movie. I think everyone wants to see another one. It was Brad Pitt’s biggest movie of all time. … It was a great story, it was fun, and you loved it when you were walking out of the theater or watching it at home.”

Bruckheimer would echo his sentiments, saying,

So many people come to me and say, ‘Jerry, when I want to show my kids something, I’ll turn on F1 because I feel so good after seeing the movie,’ and that’s what we try to do. We try to entertain audiences around the world and tell them a great story, excite them, make them laugh, make them cry, make them feel better when they walk out.”

He concluded,

Thanks to Eddy, we had that opportunity to do it, and we’re so fortunate that he’s a sports fan and an F1 fan. Without him, I don’t think the movie would have gotten made.”

Shortly after the film’s release, Pitt indicated he would like to return for a sequel, though he wasn’t sure how his character would fit in. “I would want to drive again, selfishly speaking,” Pitt said. “F1 is still the focus. It needs to be on Joshua Pierce – Damson Idris’s character – and the rest of the team fighting for a championship. Where does Sonny fit in? I’m not sure. Sonny’s probably out on the Bonneville Salt Flats, setting speed records or something like that. So I’m not sure beyond that, just yet.“
