Big news for film geeks! Letterboxd has announced something brand new! The world famous movie diary tracking site has revealed that they will soon be launching a video rental / streaming service called simply the “Letterboxd Video Store“. Described as “our own curated rental spot”, the Letterboxd Video Store is a curated rental service to watch new films and old films without having to head elsewhere and find them on another platform. They explain: “This isn’t a subscription service! No lock-in, no paywall. Just rent the films you want, whenever you want, and join the conversation with our community logging, reviewing and adding them to lists.” We’ve been huge fans of Letterboxd for a decade or more – and even once added their review widget at the bottom of our reviews (alas it doesn’t work anymore). I update my account daily with whatever I’ve seen, writing my thoughts, as well as following lists & other reviews. It’s one of the best movie websites out there right now. I’m glad they’re shaking things up with something like this – it sounds like a clever way to get people to watch all the films they find and read about on Letterboxd. More details on the news below.
For the full announcement on their “Video Store”, click the image below and head to the Letterboxd website.

So here’s all the juicy details (at least what they’ve revealed so far): “Think of it as curated shelves instead of just scrolling lists endlessly without being able to make up your mind on what to watch.” It’s a rental (and watch) service directly inside Letterboxd. And it’s not just for films you already know. They’re going to show it all: “Festival standouts that are yet to be distributed. Long-watchlisted titles finally made available. Restorations and rediscoveries worth celebrating.” The rental films will be available in a “shelf” and it will change from time-to-time: “We program these shelves using millions of watchlists, reviews and other secret sauce signals.” Adding that: “Every film is chosen because members want to watch it, not just because it’s easy to license.” Well, all of this sounds amazing! I’m already an avid Letterboxd user and this sounds like it’s going to make it even better – and remind people to keep watching, too. They’re trying to make sure films will be available in many countries worldwide, but of course: “Rental availability and cost will depend on your location.” And best of all: “No late fees. Just late-night discoveries.” Bring it on, LB! Stay tuned for updates and make sure you have your Letterboxd account up & running (+ follow me while you’re at it).
