Meta AI bots impersonated celebrities, produced lewd images, report finds

In an exclusive investigation, Reuters uncovered that Meta has been using the names and likenesses of celebrities without their consent to power AI chatbots that frequently made flirtatious advances toward users.

The report found these bots scattered across Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. While many were created by users, at least three originated from a Meta employee, including two Taylor Swift “parody” bots. Other celebrity likenesses that surfaced included Scarlett Johansson, Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez, and 16-year-old Percy Jackson star Walker Scobell.

Over several weeks of testing, Reuters documented how the bots often insisted they were the real celebrity in question. When prompted, some generated photorealistic and intimate images of their famous counterparts. These included lingerie shots and bathtub scenes, compounding the bots’ routine sexual advances.

A Meta spokesperson admitted to Reuters that its AI systems should never have produced such images. The spokesperson acknowledged the lapse as a failure to enforce the company’s own policies, which explicitly prohibit the creation of sexually suggestive content involving public figures. Reuters also contacted the Meta employee behind the flirty Taylor Swift chatbots, but she declined to comment.

This latest revelation adds to a growing list of criticism surrounding Meta’s lax regulation of its AI bots. Earlier this week, the company restricted its use by teenagers after a separate Reuters investigation exposed how Meta avatars engaged in “sensual and romantic” conversations with minors.

That report triggered a Senate probe and led a coalition of state attorneys general to issue an open letter demanding the company put stronger safeguards in place to shield minors from sexualized AI content.

Dutch Trade Minister Sjoerd Sjoerdsma visited Washington this week to meet with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and members of Congress to oppose the MATCH Act, a bill that would bar Chinese chipmakers from accessing Western semiconductor equipment, and one that would hit ASML especially hard.

ASML, based in the Netherlands, is Europe’s most valuable company and the only maker in the world of the sophisticated lithography machines that are used to make cutting-edge AI chips.

“It’s exceptional that I’m coming here to broadly outline our concerns to Congress,” Sjoerdsma told Bloomberg after the meetings. “The stakes for the Netherlands may be very high.”

China accounts for 19% of ASML’s net system sales. The MATCH Act would go further than existing controls, extending curbs to ASML’s deep ultraviolet immersion machines on top of the long-standing ban on its most advanced extreme ultraviolet, or EUV, tools reaching China.

As ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet told TechCrunch in May, what China can currently buy are older-generation deep ultraviolet tools — gear first shipped about a decade ago — the same machines the MATCH Act would now relegate as off-limits.

The bill, introduced in April, hasn’t yet faced a full House or Senate vote; Bloomberg notes it would likely need to be folded into a larger package to pass.

announced X3D Turbo Mode 2.0, a new feature designed specifically for Ryzen X3D chips that can automatically boost gaming and productivity performance without requiring users to manually tweak BIOS settings or overclock their systems. According to GIGABYTE, the feature is exclusive to its X3D Series motherboards and supports Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 Series X3D processors.

Up to 34% Higher Performance in Some Games

GIGABYTE Introduces One-Click Performance Boost for AMD Ryzen X3D Processors

AMD’s Ryzen X3D processors are already among the best gaming CPUs you can buy right now, but GIGABYTE thinks there’s still some extra performance left on the table. The company has announced X3D Turbo Mode 2.0, a new feature designed specifically for Ryzen X3D chips that can automatically boost gaming and productivity performance without requiring users to manually tweak BIOS settings or overclock their systems. According to GIGABYTE, the feature is exclusive to its X3D Series motherboards and supports Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 Series X3D processors.

Up to 34% Higher Performance in Some Games

GIGABYTE claims X3D Turbo Mode 2.0 can deliver noticeable gains across several popular games. In the company’s internal testing, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 saw performance improvements of up to 34%, while Cyberpunk 2077 saw improvements of up to 25%. Battlefield 6 reportedly delivered gains of up to 21%, and Counter-Strike 2 saw improvements of around 12%.

While real-world results will naturally vary depending on your hardware configuration and game settings, the numbers suggest that the feature could offer a free performance boost for users already running compatible Ryzen X3D systems. The benefits aren’t limited to gaming either. GIGABYTE says productivity workloads also see improvements, with Cinebench R24 Multi-Core scores increasing by up to 13.8%. That could make the feature useful for creators, streamers, and users who regularly run CPU-intensive applications.

How X3D Turbo Mode 2.0 Works

Instead of relying on traditional manual overclocking, X3D Turbo Mode 2.0 uses what GIGABYTE calls its Dynamic OC Engine. The system continuously analyzes workloads and adjusts CPU behavior in real time through a dedicated hardware controller built into supported motherboards. By working directly with the board’s power delivery system, the feature aims to extract additional performance while maintaining system stability.

In simple terms, the motherboard automatically determines when extra performance is available and adjusts settings accordingly, removing much of the trial-and-error typically associated with CPU tuning.

Availability and Compatibility

X3D Turbo Mode 2.0 is currently available on GIGABYTE’s X3D Series motherboards and supports AMD Ryzen X3D processors across the Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 families. Supported models include several X870E and X870 boards, such as the AORUS XTREME X3D AI TOP, AORUS MASTER X3D, AORUS PRO X3D, AORUS ELITE X3D, AERO X3D, and EAGLE X3D series.

With Ryzen X3D processors continuing to dominate gaming benchmarks, GIGABYTE is positioning X3D Turbo Mode 2.0 as an easy way for users to squeeze even more performance out of their existing hardware without diving into manual overclocking.
