Reacher remains a frontrunner among all the modern crime thriller adaptations on streaming right now, but Netflix seems to have two perfect replacements for the hit Prime Video series.
When it comes to delivering compelling dad shows, Prime Video has almost always been the leading streaming service with its adaptation of the Harry Bosch and Jack Ryan books. However, in recent years, Prime Video has doubled down on its efforts to reign supreme in the crime thriller genre by delivering one hit dad show after another.
Among all these hits, Reacher dominates Prime Video’s catalog with its consistent critical and commercial acclaim. While Netflix is yet to catch up with Prime Video in this space, two of its best action thrillers have the potential to rival Reacher.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole & The Night Agent On Netflix Are Both Worthy Reacher Rivals
The Night Agent was always considered a worthy Reacher replacement, but it looks like Netflix’s new addition to the genre, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, has also joined the ranks. Unlike Reacher, The Night Agent focuses on a character who operates more within a massive, suffocating system. Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole is similar as it centers on a titular detective who actively works for the Oslo Police.
However, like Jack Reacher and Peter Sutherland, Detective Harry Hole does not shy away from breaking many rules during his crime-solving endeavors. Peter Sutherland seems to incline more towards moral righteousness. Harry Hole, in contrast, operates more like Jack Reacher and crosses many moral boundaries to fulfill his sense of justice.
Similar to Peter Sutherland in The Night Agent, Harry Hole never turns into a full-fledged vigilante in Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole on Netflix. There are story beats in the show, however, where he finds himself at odds with the very people he is sworn to work alongside.
Harry Hole’s stories are primarily confined to one fixed Norwegian location. He is not always on the move like Reacher and Sutherland. However, like the two heroes, Detective Hole, too, struggles with holding on to relationships because of his commitment to his job. Even his romantic relationships do not last too long because he is often consumed by his cases.
Although Harry Hole is not as overpowered as Jack Reacher or as resourceful and constantly mobile as Peter Sutherland, he, too, is portrayed as a masterful detective. His ability to immerse himself in his criminal cases and navigate the thin, gray line between legal procedure and moral justice makes him as skilled as Reacher and Sutherland.
With so many intriguing parallels between Reacher, The Night Agent, and Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, it would be fair to say that all three shows are perfect crime thriller rivals.
Prime Video’s Still The King Of Dad Shows, But Netflix Is Building A Solid Library
The Night Agent has only gotten better with each new season even though it started adopting original story beats after season 1. The show’s consistent success seemingly spells a bright future for it. Similar to The Night Agent, even Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole thrives in its opening season. The show even earned positive reviews from viewers and critics and will likely get renewed for season 2 on Netflix.
However, in terms of both critical acclaim and commercial success, both Netflix crime thriller shows are yet to match Prime Video’s Reacher and Bosch.
Apart from being the streaming home of near-perfect crime thriller adaptations like Reacher and Bosch, Prime Video’s catalog also includes other compelling franchises like Cross and Jack Ryan. Spin-offs like Neagley and Ballard are also proving to be strong additions, cementing Prime Video as the best streaming service for dad shows.
At the same time, though, Netflix seems to be gradually rising in the ranks with its adaptations of popular crime thriller novels. While only time will tell what the future holds for The Night Agent and Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, both shows hold immense potential and could also eventually expand into full-fledged franchises like Reacher.
