New Psychological Thriller Remake Burns Up Streaming Charts Despite Harsh Critic Divide

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake is burning up the streaming charts despite dividing critics quite harshly. Released on October 22, Hulu’s new movie serves as a loose remake of the 1992 psychological thriller of the same title.

Now, a day after its release, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake ranks first on Hulu’s Top 10 movies for today, October 23. It ranks above Anyone But You, 40 Acres, Twilight, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, Breaking Dawn – Part 2, Hotel Transylvania, and Scream (1996).

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake also ranks fifth on Hulu’s Top 10 overall, below TV shows Only Murders in the Building, Chad Powers, Murdaugh: Death in the Family, High Potential, and above General Hospital, 9-1-1: Nashville, 9-1-1, Doc, and Grey’s Anatomy.

Directed by Michelle Garza Cervera, with a script written by Micah Bloomberg, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake follows a wealthy suburban mother who welcomes a new nanny into her home and quickly realizes that she is not who she says she is.

The cast is led by scream queens Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Wolf Lake, Final Destination 3, Death Proof, Black Christmas) and Maika Monroe (The Guest, It Follows, Villains, Longlegs). Raúl Castillo, Martin Starr, Mileiah Vega, Emmy nominee Riki Lindhome (Garfunkel and Oates), and Shannon Cochran also star.

Despite its instant streaming success, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake is dividing critics quite harshly, indicated by its 49% score on Rotten Tomatoes. With fewer than 50 ratings from users, it doesn’t yet have an audience score.

In ScreenRant‘s review of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Mae Abdulbaki writes, “Hulu’s underwhelming psychological thriller needed to delve deeper into its intriguing ideas… Hulu’s 2025 remake of the 1992 film is the kind of remake that falls somewhere in the middle, standing between not so horrible and not so great.”

Otherwise, there is much praise for Michelle Garza Cervera’s bold direction, tense atmosphere, and strong performances from Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Maika Monroe, but much criticism regarding its lack of suspense and uneven tone. Its admirers call it a thoughtful female-driven remake, though its detractors see it as lifeless, unnecessary, and bland.

Now streaming on Hulu, audiences can watch The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake and form their own opinions.
