After taking a blockbuster detour with Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, director Adam Wingard is returning to his roots with Onslaught, a sci-fi action flick revolving around super soldiers, a badass sniper, and plenty of blood and guts. Sounds good to me. With San Diego Comic-Con now in full swing, Wingard took to the stage, along with members of the cast, to show off some new footage from Onslaught.

An intriguing trailer for Wingard’s Onslaught was screened this evening at Comic-Con, revealing Dan Stevens’ look for the upcoming film. He’s got white hair and is possibly playing a Nazi scientist. He’s definitely NOT his character from The Guest, as some thought. According to Wingard, they were able to make the movie after spending a decade “sucking the studio’s teet.” Wingard also mentioned that John Carpenter influenced the film, since the famed director made “hangout” movies, like a movie from the ’80s that gives you warm fuzzies. Interesting, and definitely not what I was expecting.
In addition to the Onslaught trailer, the crowd saw a clip of Adria Arjona shooting pumpkins while having flashbacks to Iraq. The clip boasts a wicked Carpenter-esque score. According to Stevens, the film is set in the same universe as The Guest, but he’s playing a different character. The trailer is likely to drop online in the coming days.

All About Onslaught

Adria Arjona (Hit Man) stars as the badass Army sniper trying to protect her daughter, with Dan Stevens (The Guest), Drew Starkey (Outer Banks), Michael Biehn (The Terminator), Reginald VelJohnson (Die Hard), comedian Eric Wareheim (Tim & Eric), and Rebecca Hall (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire) rounding out the rest of the cast alongside UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Alex “Poatan” Pereira.
The screenplay for Onslaught was written by Simon Barrett, who collaborated with Wingard on The Guest, You’re Next, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, A Horrible Way to Die, and Blair Witch, among other projects.
The film recently received an R-rating for strong bloody violence, some gore, sexual material/nudity, and language. Very excited to see more from this one.
Onslaught will be released in theaters on September 4.
