Original X-Men Star Reveals Why She Isn’t Returning for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Avengers: Doomsday is growing into a superhero extravaganza. From the return of Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers to the sheer scope and scale of the movie has excited fans around the world. While Marvel Studios has unveiled a huge cast list, more heroes are expected to grace the screen in the epic story. With the addition of OG X-Men cast like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and more, the anticipation is off the roof for fans of the franchise. However, Famke Janssen, who played Jean Gray in the original trilogy, recently explained why she won’t be returning.

The actress was discussing her recent films with Kristian Harloff; she gets to don multiple caps along with acting now, be it designing her own clothes or having a seat at the table as an executive producer. She explained that she is enjoying this multidimensional creative role. “It’s so cool to have these added parts to it, what I’m doing in my life right now, because I love creativity. I’m always looking to create.” As for Doomsday, she revealed:

“I would not be asked back on Doomsday, or somewhere else, with that type of input. That’s not what they want from me. It’s hard for me now to just look back and worry, or think about a part where I get a few lines. It just doesn’t seem that interesting to me. I’m in a different place, and I’ve earned my way into this moment, and I’m running with it, because this is 80 films under my belt, and I’ve paid my dues.”

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is a “Love Letter” to Superhero Movies

The hopes for Doomsday are high. The fandom in the last few years has struggled to catch up with all the MCU offerings on streaming and in theaters. However, the studio is expecting for that to change with the upcoming movie and its follow-up, Secret Wars. Nonetheless, Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu previously shared his excitement with Collider, saying:

“It’s pretty much what you think. I don’t want to put words out that will be turned into their own sound bites, but I think it was just an incredibly exciting feeling to know that you were coming back and then also to get to work with so many incredible people whose body of work I either grew up watching or I greatly, greatly admire. Getting to see them all put on tights and spandex and to play in this beautiful sandbox felt like a love letter to superhero movies in general.”

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for more such updates.
