Paul Anthony Kelly Is Already Dressing Like a Kennedy

With all the buzzy biopics hitting theaters and streaming services of late, there’s been no shortage of historical fodder for method-dressing stars to reference on their press tours. Think: Jeremy Allen White channeling blue-collar Springsteen in clingy white tank tops and leather jackets, or the brooding, high-collar suits Jacob Elordi has taken to while promoting Emerald Fennell’s campy adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Now, with Ryan Murphy’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette premiering today, the show’s fresh-faced male lead Paul Anthony Kelly is leaning into Kennedy-esque prep.

For an appearance on Good Morning America yesterday, Kelly sported a look from designer Michael Rider’s red-hot Celine: light-wash jeans, crisp white dress shirt, and a razor-sharp, peak-lapel blazer, all topped off with a red-white-and-blue striped necktie (though it appeared to be tucked into his waistband, it was, in fact, one of Rider’s signature squared-off ties), and a pair of cheeky, low-profile leather slippers reminiscent of Harry Styles’s recent ballet flats. A slim leather belt and a pair of paparazzi-averse Wayfarers only furthered the nostalgic vibes.

All taken together, it felt a bit like a cross between JFK Sr.’s 1960s trad Americana with Jr.’s oddball, effortless aesthetic. Given his genes, it’s no surprise Armani tuxedos fit him like a second skin, but John-John was also a bit of a sartorial rebel. In the 1990s, the late attorney and George magazine founder was often spotted rollerblading down New York City streets wearing boxers and a backwards beret. And even in professional settings, his whimsical nature occasionally made for some rather unusual ensembles.

“I cannot tell you how many times we would sit in a meeting with an advertiser or someone important where [JFK Jr.] would have had to wear a suit that day,” Negi Darsess, George’s creative services director, once told The Hollywood Reporter, and “a few of us would know that under that closed suit jacket was the chain to his bicycle because he forgot the key to the lock at home, so it was around his waist.”

As a Hollywood newcomer, it would’ve been understandable if Kelly had chosen to avoid cosplaying as his character on the Love Story press tour in an effort to establish an identity of his own. (Especially given the glut of hyper-themed, on-the-nose press-tour style these days.) But when you’re playing an icon as indelibly stylish as JFK Jr., it’d actually be crazy not to closely associate yourself with his outsized aura. Expect to see plenty more of Kelly in slightly offbeat prep in the months to come.
