The cast of Parker Finn’s remake of Possession continues to grow. According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Madeline Brewer, Emory Cohen, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez have signed on to star alongside Margaret Qualley, Callum Turner, Paul Dano, and Diego Calva in Paramount’s new take on the cult psychological horror classic.
The project marks Finn’s next feature after turning Smile into one of horror’s biggest modern franchises.
Parker Finn takes on Andrzej Żuławski’s cult horror masterpiece
Released in 1981, director Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession has long been considered one of the most unique and unsettling psychological horror films ever made. Set in Cold War-era West Berlin, the original starred Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani as a married couple whose divorce spirals into infidelity, madness, murder, body horror, and increasingly surreal supernatural events.
The film earned Adjani the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival and has only grown in stature over the decades.
The official synopsis for the remake has not been revealed, but it is expected to draw inspiration from the original story of a marriage collapsing under increasingly horrifying circumstances.
The cast continues to take shape
Madeline Brewer is best known for The Handmaid’s Tale and recently appeared in You and Anniversary.
Emory Cohen recently starred opposite Timothée Chalamet in Marty Supreme, while Nicholas Alexander Chavez earned acclaim for portraying Lyle Menendez in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story before reteaming with Ryan Murphy on Grotesquerie.
They join previously announced cast members Margaret Qualley, Callum Turner, Paul Dano, and Diego Calva, giving the remake a strong ensemble cast.
Robert Pattinson is producing the remake
Finn is directing from his own screenplay and is producing through his Bad Feeling banner alongside Jonathan Fass.
The producing team also includes Roy Lee and Andrew Childs through Vertigo Entertainment, while Robert Pattinson is on board as a producer. Marc Bienstock will serve as executive producer.
A divisive remake
Ever since the project was announced, the idea of remaking Possession has sparked debate among horror fans. The original film is deeply tied to Żuławski’s personal experiences, including his divorce and exile from Poland, making many question whether its intensity can truly be recreated.
Isabelle Adjani recently revealed that she has given Margaret Qualley her blessing to take on the role she made famous. Speaking at Cannes earlier this year, Adjani praised Qualley as an incredibly talented actress and said she understood why a new generation of filmmakers would want to revisit the material.
Not everyone has been convinced. JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray previously argued that the original film’s Cold War setting, emotional power, and finale make it nearly impossible to remake without losing what made it so special.
