‘Predator: Badlands’ Brings the Hunt Home With a Digital and Physical Release

The hunt is coming to a living room near you. Following an impressive run in cinemas last fall, Predator: Badlands will officially cross over into physical and digital form, with fans invited to add the franchise-redefining film to their collection. The excitement begins on January 6 when the latest from Dan Trachtenberg (Prey, Predator: Killer of Killers) blasts onto digital platforms with its physical Blu-ray release to follow one month later on February 17, making it the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for your loved ones (or for yourself).

After reigniting the ferver of a fandom with 2022’s Prey, Trachtenberg returns to the helm of the Predator franchise for the third time with Badlands. Despite Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers direct to Hulu releases, the third time was finally the charm for the filmmaker, with Predator: Badlands not just screening in cinemas, but breaking beyond box office expectations. Against its $105 million production budget, the title earned a staggering $184.2 million around the globe by the time its theatrical run came to an end. Its financial gain landed it the bragging rights of being the top-earner in the long-running sci-fi film series.

Over at Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel garnered plenty of critical acclaim, clocking in with an 86% critics’ approval score, falling just behind Prey’s 94% and Predator: Killer of Killers’ 95%. Considering the worry surrounding BadlandsPG-13 rating, the movie certainly held up with the fandom and critics alike. Now that Trachtenberg has pulled a hat trick with his stamp on the Predator franchise, we can’t wait to see what kind of movie magic he makes next, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed that a new Alien vs. Predator is at the top of his list.

What Is ‘Predator: Badlands’ About?

Just as he reinvented the wheel with Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers, Trachtenberg set out to do something totally different with Predator: Badlands. Unlike the movies that came before it, Badlands doesn’t feature any human characters and instead focuses on a young Yautja named Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), who is trying to prove his warrior status to his family and himself. After landing on the most deadly planet in the universe, Dek finds that while he may be on the hunt, he’s also prey himself. Along the way, he crosses paths with a Weyland-Yutani synth named Thia (Elle Fanning), who inserts herself in his mission and establishes herself as a fearsome fighter despite having lost everything below her waist. Together, the pair goes after the deadliest creature in the galaxy and attempt to track down Thia’s twin sister Tessa.

Find Predator: Badlands on digital January 6 and Blu-ray on February 17.
