When Game of Thrones premiered on HBO way back in 2011, it quickly became a juggernaut series. There were already fans of George R.R. Martin‘s novels, but the show gained even more of a devoted following throughout its eight seasons. The fantasy drama wasn’t just praised by viewers; Game of Thrones was also a critical darling for much of its run, nabbing an incredible 59 Emmy wins, including Outstanding Drama Series four separate times. Even after the show ended in 2019, fans of the universe have continued their journey in Westeros courtesy of two prequel series, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. With all of this massive success, it makes perfect sense that every other streamer has been hoping to land another fantasy series that could match HBO’s achievements. Now, Prime Video just might have the solution.
The Dragon-Fueled ‘Fourth Wing’ Adaptation Has Landed at Prime Video
Fourth Wing is the first book in the Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros. It was published in 2023, and has since become one of the most popular book series of all time. With BookTok and Instagram buzz, Fourth Wing has become a phenomenon in its own right. Two more books have been released (Iron Flame in 2023 and Onyx Storm in 2025) and have matched Fourth Wing‘s success with millions of copies sold. Yarros has noted that the series will include two more books before she wraps up the story of Violet Sorrengail, the young, introverted heroine who falls in love with the ultimate bad boy, dragon rider Xaden Riorson.
Fourth Wing is just the start of a highly addictive, action-packed fantasy full of adventure and lots of spicy romance. Devoted readers of the books have been eager to see their favorite characters brought to the screen, and were delighted in 2023 when it was announced that Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society, and Amazon MGM Studios had purchased the rights to bring Fourth Wing to television. Now, there’s a clear path for the fantasy series to air on Prime Video.

‘Fourth Wing’ Is Poised To Be a Gigantic Success for Prime Video
There are many reasons why Fourth Wing could become even more of a hit than Game of Thrones was for HBO. Yarros’ books have a huge, built-in fanbase, and the buzz that’s currently surrounding Fourth Wing is virtually unmatched in terms of how many viewers would likely tune into the first season. There is plenty of story to develop right out of the gate, and because there will eventually be five books in total, there is a strong foundation and no shortage of material for the television series to portray.
Because the series has built up so much hype before it’s even begun production, Prime Video can likely launch the series with huge ratings. So far in its history as a streaming service, Prime Video has offered several fantasy shows that haven’t managed to break through in the same way that Game of Thrones did. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time were both incredibly expensive to make, but were never able to capture the zeitgeist like Game of Thrones was able to do. With a popular series like Fourth Wing, they might be able to change that.
Fourth Wing is starting on the right foot thanks to the creatives working behind the scenes. Yarros will serve as an executive producer for the series, which increases the likelihood that the television adaptation will stay true to the books. Meredith Averill has already been tapped for showrunner. Her background working on Wednesday and The Haunting of Hill House suggests she’s more than comfortable successfully exploring the fantasy genre. Fourth Wing is also bringing Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the team behind HBO’s fantasy/sci-fi series, Westworld, on board as well. Along with Jordan as an executive producer, the team behind launching Fourth Wing is already looking top-notch, which suggests that Prime Video will indeed have a hit on their hands.
There have been no official casting announcements yet, but that hasn’t stopped some actors from throwing their hats in the ring. Recent breakout star of the horror film Obsession, Inde Navarrette, has revealed she’d love to play Violet. Meanwhile, actors who have been floated for Xaden include Josh Heuston and Charles Melton. Even though production hasn’t even begun, it’s clear that the excitement is building around the Fourth Wing adaptation, indicating that Prime Video is nearing its answer to Game of Thrones.
