Sean Penn is slated to direct a new film about a January 6th cop with Bradley Cooper in talks to star

Sean Penn’s passion project

Sean Penn is following up his recent Oscar victory from Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another with a film that he’ll be helming himself. Deadline reports that Penn has lined up his next passion project, which is currently untitled. The actor will reteam with Warner Bros. for a film depicting a police officer’s involvement with the events of January 6th at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Penn has written the script and will be directing the film. He is also attached to produce with John Ira Palmer and John Wildermuth under their Projected Picture Works banner. CAA Media Finance negotiated the WB deal on behalf of the producers.

Bradley Cooper is currently in talks to star in the film, but a deal has not yet been made. Since Cooper has recently been tapped to take over the Ocean’s Eleven prequel, production on Penn’s film is aiming for mid-2027.

According to Deadline, the movie has been described as “an unexpected story about friendship. But it will function on multiple levels. Based on one of the real-life cops caught up in the Capitol attack, the project is understood to have buy-in from its subject, however their identity is being kept under wraps for now.” Additionally, the outlet stated that “the focus is on the subject’s early journey, one that led to him later becoming an American hero in the eyes of many. It’s not a ‘January 6th movie’ per se.”

Bradley Cooper and Ocean’s Eleven

Meanwhile, just a couple of months ago, it was confirmed that Bradley Cooper will be pulling triple duty as a writer, director and star for Margot Robbie’s Ocean’s Eleven prequel. She had made the announcement at CinemaCon with a little video. Robbie would tell the attendees at the Warner Bros. presentation, “Before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows: his parents. You’ll see them in all their prime in our new movie, pulling off an epic heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.” Warner representatives Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy confirmed that Cooper will also be producing with LuckyChap. The film, which currently does not have a title, is slated for June 25, 2027.
