Five filmmakers from across the globe take home top honors at the fourth annual short film competition

The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards celebrated its fourth edition with a star-studded gala ceremony on June 11 at the iconic Sony Pictures Studios Scenic Arts Building in Culver City, California — and the night belonged to a group of visionary short filmmakers representing some of the most unexpected corners of the world.

Hosted by Emmy Award winner Denny Directo of Entertainment Tonight, the evening honored five category winners selected from a global shortlist of 30 films representing more than 20 countries, drawn from a pool of more than 8,400 filmmakers across 162 countries and territories. That’s not a typo — over eight thousand filmmakers entered, making the competition one of the most expansive short film programs running today.

Established by Creo and sponsored by Sony, the Awards aim to highlight outstanding original talents and connect emerging creators directly with the film industry. Now in its fourth year, the program has carved out a distinct identity in the awards landscape: it isn’t chasing prestige in the traditional sense, but rather hunting for raw, unfiltered creative voices from places that don’t always get a seat at the table.

The Winners

The Fiction category went to Jack Hughes of the United Kingdom for Deadheading, a film whose premise sounds almost like a dark comedy pitch but lands with genuine emotional weight. When Doreen and her husband, Jim, learn that he has only months left to live, his lifelong dream of an allotment garden plot seems dashed. Determined to make him happy, Doreen sets out to discover who’s ahead of them on the waitlist — and to take matters into her own hands. The Fiction category prize was presented by Will Gluck, Golden Globe-nominated director and producer of Anyone But You, Peter Rabbit, and Easy A. In the Non-Fiction category, Christine Seow of Singapore won for Two Traveling Aunties, a documentary that, by its title alone, suggests the kind of warmhearted storytelling that tends to stick with you long after the credits roll. Seow’s win marks a notable moment for Southeast Asian documentary filmmaking on this kind of global stage.

The Animation award went to the collaborative duo of Michelle Brøndum and Ida Melum of Denmark and Norway for Ovary-Acting. Directed by Justin Chadwick — the filmmaker behind Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom — the animation prize was presented to the Scandinavian pair for their stop-motion film about a young woman stuck at her sister’s baby shower and forced to confront her own feelings. It’s the kind of premise that sounds deceptively small but points to the sort of intimate, personal filmmaking that short films do better than almost any other format.

The Student category winner was Ana A. Alpizar of Cuba for Norheimsund, a film whose title — a small Norwegian municipality — immediately raises questions that the film presumably answers in compelling fashion. That a Cuban student filmmaker is telling a story rooted in a Norwegian location speaks precisely to the kind of cross-cultural boundary-crossing the program champions.

Finally, the Future Format award — a category that challenges filmmakers to push the boundaries of storytelling technology and technique — went to Innocent Yama Lamido of Nigeria for Creating Without Permission. The film is described as a meditation on creation and “the spaces between moments.” It’s a fittingly conceptual winner for a category designed to reward exactly that kind of bold, experimental impulse.

The Jury

The jury that deliberated over this year’s shortlist included Will Gluck; Rachel O’Connor, producer and President of Film and Television at Pascal Pictures (Challengers, Spider-Man: No Way Home); and Adam Rosette, co-director of the animated feature GOAT. The jury was chaired by Justin Chadwick, director of The Other Boleyn Girl and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

The jury noted that “the winning films captivate, challenge, and resonate long after viewing. These are artists who command their craft with confidence, execute their vision without compromise, and observe the world with clarity and empathy.”

A Genuinely Global Field

What’s striking about this year’s cohort isn’t just the quality of the work — it’s the geography. The five category winners hail from the UK, Singapore, Denmark/Norway, Cuba, and Nigeria. That’s a map that major studio development slates almost never reflect. The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards makes a structural argument that the most interesting filmmakers alive right now are not necessarily waiting for Hollywood to discover them — they’re already making films on their own terms, wherever they are.

As the jury statement read: “Cinema remains the universal language, and these filmmakers demonstrate that its most essential voices are rising from every corner of the globe. It’s precisely filmmakers of this caliber that the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards were created to discover and to champion.”

That’s the pitch and, looking at the 2026 class, it’s hard to argue with the results.

What’s Next

Following a successful fourth edition, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards will return for a fifth edition in spring 2027, with submissions opening in July 2026.
