Sunil Gavaskar announces Celebrity Golf event in Mumbai to create awareness about CHAMPS Foundation

India legend and former captain Sunil Gavaskar launched the DP World Celebrity Golf Event, a charity initiative that will bring together some of the biggest names in Indian and international sport, which will take place on Friday, March 6, in Mumbai.

Th event, which will be held at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club in Chembur, Mumbai, aims to create awareness for the CHAMPS Foundation (Caring, Helping, Assisting, Motivating, Promoting Sportsperson), founded by Gavaskar, which supports former Indian international athletes facing financial hardship and medical challenges.

Since its inception, the CHAMPS Foundation has played a vital role in providing dignity, care, and assistance to sporting heroes who have represented India.

The event will feature an elite roster of over 100 participants competing across an 18-hole course. Among the participants are Indian cricket legends Yuvraj Singh, G.R Viswanath, Venkatesh Prasad, Harbhajan Singh, Ajay Jadeja, Parthiv Patel, Murali Kartik, S. Badrinath, Murali Vijay, and Nikhil Chopra.

The event will also feature international cricketers Eoin Morgan, Michael Vaughan and David Lloyd, and participation from distinguished athletes beyond cricket, including Indian tennis legend Leander Paes, badminton great Prakash Padukone, along with leading Indian professional golfers Neha Tripathi, Ridhima Dilawari and Gaurav Ghei.

Speaking about the initiative, Gavaskar said, “The CHAMPS Foundation was created with the belief that those who have brought glory to India through sport should never be left behind in times of need. This event is not just about golf; it is about giving back to the sporting community that has given us so much.

“I am deeply grateful to DP World and all the participating legends who have come forward to support this cause. Their presence reflects the strong sense of camaraderie and responsibility that defines the global sporting fraternity.”

The Athletics Federation of India on Friday announced selection criteria for 2026 World Athletics Under-20 Championships scheduled for August 5-9 in Eugene, USA.

Selection of the Indian squad for 2026 World Athletics U-20 will be finalised based on performance at three different domestic competitions.

The Indian Athletics Series 9 in Ludhiana, Punjab on June 13 will be one of the platforms to select athletes for the U-20 Worlds. The events are: 1500m, 3,000m, 5,000m, 3000m steeplechase, shot put, discus throw, hammer throw, javelin throw.

Indian Athletics Series (10th leg) on June 14 in Trivandrum, Kerala will also be one of the qualification competitions. The events in Kerala are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 110mh,100mh, 400mh, high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump.

The ongoing 24th National Junior Federation Competition in Tumkur, Karnataka will mainly act as a qualification event for decathlon/ heptathlon and race walk.

Only one athlete per event will be automatically considered for selection based on the performance. Except for the relay.

The second entry will be subject to the discretion of the AFI selection committee.

Performance at the 22nd Asian U-20 athletics Championships in Hong Kong from May 28 to 31 can be considered for selection provided the athletes have competed in final trials and maintained their performance.
