As Kolkata Knight Riders prepares for a key stretch, Matheesha Pathirana’s availability has emerged as a gripping subplot. The pacer linked up with the squad in Kolkata on April 19 after receiving clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket but has yet to feature in a game.
Pathirana trained here on Saturday, raising hopes of his availability against Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, bowling coach Tim Southee chose to be tentative about his inclusion, given the mandatory overseas pool shuffle that must follow.
“He’s been around the group for a while now. We’ll assess the conditions and make a decision,” he said.

Southee also underlined the need for early breakthroughs against SRH’s formidable batting line-up.
“Teams that have been able to take wickets early have set up their innings nicely. [Against SRH] it’s important to try and win the PowerPlay by taking wickets as early as you can.”
With dew unlikely to impact proceedings in the afternoon game, the 37-year-old believes KKR bowlers have the opportunity to make a big statement against one of the tournament’s in-form sides.
“It’s an exciting challenge for our bowlers. We know how dangerous SRH is, especially the top three and then the likes of Heinrich Klaasen in the middle.”

Delhi Capitals batting all-rounder Ashutosh Sharma said he relishes his role as a finisher after his side snapped a three-match losing streak with a seven-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in an IPL match here.
Ashutosh struck an unbeaten 25 off 15 balls, hitting four boundaries, as Delhi successfully chased down a daunting 226-run target with five balls to spare on Friday.
“I enjoy being a finisher for my team. The team has trusted me to bat in these situations and I enjoy playing in these moments. I always feel that as long as I am at the crease, I can win the game for my team,” Ashutosh said at the post-match press conference.
Chasing a stiff total, Delhi was laid a solid foundation by KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka, who stitched together a 110-run opening partnership.
“In T20 cricket nowadays, a lot depends on the opening partnership and the powerplay. Our openers played really well and because of that we were in the game throughout and could take it till the end,” Ashutosh said.
Delhi’s overseas pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Kyle Jamieson had earlier set the tone by removing Rajasthan’s explosive openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi inside the first two overs.
“We wanted to get their opening partnership out early, as they have been doing well in previous matches. That was our plan and it worked, which was good for us.” Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals batting coach Vikram Rathour admitted that poor execution with the ball cost his side the match.
“The bowlers couldn’t execute their plans again today. 226 we felt was enough on this surface, they should have been able to defend that.
“When you are defending that kind of total it is important to have a good powerplay. We gave away lots of runs and didn’t take any wicket,” he said.
Despite the defeat, Rathour drew positives from the batting effort, particularly the response after the early loss of openers. Skipper Riyan Parag led from the front with a 90 off 50 balls, while Dhruv Jurel contributed 42.
“We were consistently getting good starts. Both our openers were doing well for us in every match. So, this was the first time that both got out early. So as a team, I think it was important how we came out of that situation and how we played.
“The way Riyan and Jurel batted at that time, the partnership they built, and the way Donovan finished it, it was really good to see,” Rathour said.

Virat Kohli described the Chinnaswamy Stadium as a “special place to play cricket” as defending champion Royal Challengers Bengaluru ended its home campaign on a high after a controversy-ridden build-up to the season because of last year’s tragic stampede.
RCB on Friday rode on an explosive 115-run second-wicket stand between Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal to overhaul Gujarat Titans’ challenging 206-run target in 18.5 overs with five wickets in hand, finishing its home leg with four wins from five games.
RCB’s two remaining ‘home’ games will be played in Raipur due to prior arrangements.
“Firstly, we were quite happy we were able to play five games here and the fans get to see the team again,” said Kohli, who made a 44-ball 81 and was adjudged the player-of-the-match.
The Chinnaswamy was cleared to host seven IPL 2026 matches, including the final, after a successful safety review by government agencies days before the tournament.

The venue is next scheduled to host one playoff and the summit clash in May.
“We were happy to play here, it’s a special place to play cricket. It’s been brilliant to play at home and win four games. Hopefully, we’ll be able to come back and play here again later in the season,” said Kohli in the post-match presentation.
Kohli was also effusive in his praise for Devdutt’s 27-ball 55, calling it the “difference” in the first half of the chase.
“To be honest, we had to assess the wicket early on because they (GT) have a quality bowling attack and chasing 200 in the Chinnaswamy, we were just one partnership away.
“This is the second time Dev (Padikkal) has come and done this. You never see him slogging the ball yet he’s playing so freely. His innings was the difference in the first half and then I was trying to stay in the game so he won’t feel the pressure,” said Kohli, who is now the Orange Cap holder with 328 runs from seven innings.
Put in to bat, Gujarat Titans had a strong 128-run opening stand in 12.4 overs, but its middle order failed to maintain momentum as RCB pulled things back, denying it an additional 10-20 runs.
“Even in our bowling innings, we did well to pull things back. We were looking at 230-235 at one stage,” said Kohli.
On the pitch, he added: “Best batting conditions we’ve had this season. So if we stayed in the game long enough it would get tougher and tougher for bowlers.
“Dev was going great guns and the idea was to keep the pressure on the bowlers. There was intent, clarity and feedback from the other and we didn’t have any doubts in the partnership and that’s what worked for us.”
We had our moments: Gill
GT skipper Shubman Gill rued the dropped chance of Kohli on zero by Washington Sundar off Mohammed Siraj.
“When a batsman gets dropped on nought, it’s always tough on the fielder but it’s important how you come back into the game,” said Gill.
“We had our moments but we were not consistently able to hit the length balls. And I think they batted beautifully in the middle overs.”
Gill also pointed out GT’s middle-overs slowdown as a key factor.
“Definitely, I think from 16th to 19th overs, we couldn’t get any boundaries and couldn’t get as many runs as we would have liked. Those were crucial overs for us.
“At the end of the powerplay, we were in a good position and it was about taking wickets in the middle overs and were not able to after the powerplay got over.”

Chennai Super Kings has signed pacer Akash Madhwal as the replacement for Ayush Mhatre on Thursday.
Mhatre was ruled out of the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 due to injury sustained during the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier this week.
Mhatre, India’s U19 World Cup-winning captain, made an impactful start to the season for CSK, scoring two fifties in six matches before suffering a left hamstring injury.
Madhwal, a right-arm fast bowler, has previously represented Mumbai Indians (MI) (2023, 2024) and Rajasthan Royals (2025). He has featured in 17 IPL matches, picking up 23 wickets. Madhwal joins CSK for a fee of INR 30 Lakh.
He also has a five-wicket haul to his name, having recorded figures of 5/5 in his debut season for MI in the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants.
Additionally, CSK’s frontline pacer Khaleel Ahmed was also ruled out of the ongoing season due to a right quadricep injury. The franchise is yet to announce a replacement for the 28-year-old.

Lucknow Super Giants head coach Justin Langer compared the Ekana pitch to the famed Perth track of yesteryears, admitting that the home team has been unable to adapt to the pace and bounce on offer on it.
The LSG has struggled on its home surface, losing all three matches here. It has gone down by six and seven wickets to Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans respectively, before suffering a 40-run defeat to Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday.
The LSG lost six of its eight matches here last season, including five in a row. Overall, it has managed just nine wins from 25 games at the venue.
“The pitch here is very different than in most of India. It’s a brilliant cricket pitch. You see pace and bounce, and we just haven’t quite adjusted to it,” Langer said at the post-match press conference.
“I thought we’d started off, we’d been bowling quite well in it. We bowled well in the first game, but we’re just not adjusting to the extra pace and bounce. We saw that we’ve been out to the short ball a number of times, our batters.
“We see a lot of the wickets in India where the ball doesn’t bounce very high. This is like playing at the WACA. There’s real pace and bounce. You’re seeing some really interesting cricket being played here,” he added.
Despite boasting a formidable batting line-up featuring skipper Rishabh Pant, Australia’s Mitchell Marsh, South Africa T20 captain Aiden Markram and the flamboyant Nicholas Pooran, LSG has struggled to put up competitive totals at home, managing 141, 164 for 8 and 119 in three games.
“Our batting’s just not quite clicking, and who would have thought at the start of the season our batting wouldn’t click with the calibre of players we’ve got? We could never have read that, so we’re working hard on it.” The former Australia coach, however, had words of praise for the bowling unit, predicting a bright future for young pacers Prince Yadav and Mohsin Khan.
“Last year our numbers were incredible and we were ruing the fact that a lot of our bowlers were injured or coming back from injury or not quite fit.
“This year our bowlers have been a real credit. I think Mohsin Khan, again outstanding. Prince Yadav, I think they’re both two players who will play for India. No question in my mind they’ll both play for India.” On whether the franchise had any say in pitch preparation, Langer dismissed the notion.
“No, no, no. Their groundsmen here: I’ve said for the last couple of years this is one of the best pitches in India.” “It’s a big ground. It’s a brilliant bat… it’s a great cricket wicket actually and we just need to adapt to it better.” Meanwhile, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who struck an unbeaten 43 and picked up a wicket to guide Rajasthan to victory, said the surface was far from an ideal T20 wicket.
“The wicket wasn’t very easy. There was grass, it was a red-soil wicket, so there was bounce as well. Their four fast bowlers were making it swing and seam alongside good pace.
“I wouldn’t say it was ideally a T20 wicket, you couldn’t just go and swing at it and get runs. Fast bowlers from both teams would have enjoyed that they could bounce and seam it,” Jadeja said.
However, the seasoned all-rounder appreciated the consistency of the pitch across both the innings.
“What I liked was that the wicket was equal for both. It’s not like how it is sometimes, when batters first get a slow, seaming wicket and then nothing happens in the second innings. Both teams lost two-three wickets in the Powerplay itself.
“It was a challenging T20 match, not the typical one with fireworks from both sides. It challenges you mentally, and skill-wise you have to be sharp,” he said.

Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja said he was pleased the middle order got the chance to bat under pressure on Wednesday after they came to the rescue when the top three failed to cash in against Lucknow Super Giants.
Openers Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who are among the Indian Premier League’s top-six scorers this season so far, fell in quick succession along with Dhruv Jurel, leaving the visitor struggling at 32-3.
However, Jadeja struck an unbeaten 43 off 29 balls as the middle order lifted Rajasthan to 159-6 in 20 overs on a slow pitch. Lucknow was then bowled out for 119 as Rajasthan collected a 40-run win.
“I personally think that we (middle order) got a chance to bat at the right time and that too in a pressure situation,” Jadeja, who was named player of the match, told reporters.
“Sometimes in the past the top three are performing and making runs and the rest of the batting didn’t (get to bat) much and they got exposed in important matches.
“So it’s a good thing that in the middle phase of the tournament, all the players are batting and that too in pressure situations.”
Rajasthan, which is second in the points table, next faces Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday.

Heinrich Klaasen’s 39-ball 59 ensured that Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) maintained the momentum through the middle overs after Abhishek Sharma’s blistering start against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Even as wickets fell at regular intervals around him, the South African held firm, guiding the side to its highest Indian Premier League (IPL) total against CSK.
While runs have continued to flow from his bat, his strike rate has drawn scrutiny. This season, he has scored at 144.39 – significantly lower than his previous highs of over 170.
Notably, he has also been among the slowest starters, striking at 106.66 in his first 10 deliveries.
Earlier this month, Klaasen admitted he needed to improve his scoring rate. However, after steering SRH to a narrow 10-run win on Saturday, he emphasised that his priority was navigating difficult situations rather than focusing on strike rate.

“I have been coming in at situations where we have lost four wickets in one or two overs. So I cannot go right from the start. I need to get the job done. In difficult situations, you have to take responsibility and be mature,” he explained.
“We get paid to do the job, and I don’t care about strike rate. I know there has been a lot said about it this season, but I have been putting the team in good positions, and I am just doing my job,” he said.
“The wicket was good enough. We lost too many wickets up front, and we needed to get to that 220 mark. I thought CSK bowled extremely well at the back, and that’s why we didn’t get there.”
Klaasen also noted that the early loss of wickets led to Liam Livingstone being introduced as the Impact Player, even if it meant the likes of Nitish Kumar had to complete their full quota.
“Nitish has been bowling brilliantly. That gives us the luxury to make brave decisions like that. We know that the wicket is not going to spin a lot, so we didn’t mind him bowling the couple of overs that he did.”

India and Punjab Kings pacer Arshdeep Singh did not have the brightest of starts in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year, but a back-to-basics approach, including a lot of “target bowling” in the nets, has helped him regain his form, says his franchise coach Sairaj Bahutule.
For the first time in three matches at the Wankhede Stadium, where batters have ruled the roost, Arshdeep turned up with a terrific opening spell, accounting for Ryan Rickelton (2) and Suryakumar Yadav (0). He later dismissed Sherfane Rutherford (1) to return 4-0-22-3 on Thursday night.
Apart from striking in different spells, Arshdeep got the new ball to swing and move off the surface precariously while nailing most of his yorkers correctly at the death.
“He started off with his first two games really well and then because of the (nature of) pitches, there are lots of demands in terms of variations and sometimes, what happens is (that) you forget to bowl your stock ball,” Bahutule, who is PBKS’ spin bowling coach, told reporters after the match.
“But he is a very self-aware (bowler) and understands the nuances of the game. He went back to his basics in the last couple of days, did a lot of spot and target bowling, and he really came back with the understanding that he has to just focus on what he does best. He was very clear in his mindset…understand what works for you, what your strengths are and precisely that is what he did,” the former India player added.
Bahutule said Arshdeep’s action and the pace with which he bowls were together responsible for his performance.
“I think it is a mixture of both. He is a leading bowler in T20 cricket, in terms of wickets also, as well as the one who has the ability to swing,” he said about Arshdeep, who became the first bowler to complete 100 wickets for Punjab Kings in the IPL.
Bahutule credited head coach Ricky Ponting’s presence for the change in Prabhsimran Singh’s approach, who smacked a match-winning 80 not out off 39 balls.
“(It has) a lot to do with Ricky also being in the changing room. He himself being so positive, he rubs it across to all the batters in terms of approaching innings, and Prabh has responded really well to that,” Bahutule said.
Bahutule said PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer also has a better understanding of what a bowler would attack him with. Iyer struck 66 from 35 balls with five fours and four sixes while forging a rapid 139-run stand with Prabhsimran.
“Over a period of time, he’s really understood his game. He really works hard in knowing what is working for him and what is not working for him. Everybody has their understanding of bowling that short ball to him. But he’s become so smart at it that he understands when he is going to bowl that and he is very much ready for it,” Bahutule pointed out.
“Not only his smartness, but his execution has also become very optimal, and with a lot of clarity and understanding the situation of the game,” he added.
