#Sunderland #secures #Europa #League #spot #win #Chelsea">Sunderland secures Europa League spot with 2-1 win over Chelsea Sunderland became only the fifth side in Premier League history to qualify for Europe in its first season following promotion after beating Chelsea 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday.
A 25th-minute volley from Trai Hume and a second-half own goal from Malo Gusto lifted Sunderland into seventh place in the table. Cole Palmer pulled one back for a Chelsea side that had Wesley Fofana sent off.
Sunderland will join Bournemouth, which drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest, in the Europa League next season with Chelsea missing out on Europe entirely.
The Conference League spot went to Brighton & Hove Albion in eighth despite a 3-0 home defeat by Manchester United.
United, whose talisman Bruno Fernandes scored a goal and supplied a record-breaking 21st assist of the season, had Champions League qualification wrapped up, as did champion Arsenal, Manchester City and Aston Villa. Liverpool picked up the point it needed to make mathematically certain with a 1-1 draw at home to Brentford.
Crystal Palace can also qualify for next season’s Europa League if it beats Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final in Leipzig on Wednesday.
Sunderland last played in Europe in the 1973-74 Cup Winners’ Cup, but after a superb return season in the top flight under coach Regis Le Bris, it has a lot to look forward to next season.
Bournemouth, which played in the third tier of English football 13 years ago, will play in Europe for the first time in its history after Marcus Tavernier’s second-half equaliser earned a point at Forest in coach Andoni Iraola’s final game in charge.
Before kickoff, there was an outside chance of Champions League football for Bournemouth if other results opened up a sixth qualification position for English clubs, but that evaporated with Aston Villa’s 2-1 win at Manchester City.

There was relief for Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe in a week in which he met chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan to discuss the club’s future plans as it defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 in the Premier League at St James’ Park on Saturday.
The victory ends a run of five straight defeats in all competitions for Newcastle and will ease the pressure on Howe, at the same time catapulting the side back into the equation for European football next season.
Goals from William Osula, Dan Burn against his former side and Harvey Barnes sealed three points against an in-form Brighton team that had won six and drawn one of its previous eight Premier League fixtures.
Newcastle rode its luck at times with uncertain goalkeeping from Nick Pope and several misses from Brighton, not least Yankuba Minteh, who blazed over from a few metres out at the back post with the score at 2-1.

“It felt very good, in the changing room before the game we knew today was important for us, chasing European football for next season. The points are crucial, we keep dreaming and believing,” Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes said.
“It was a tough game, Brighton are a good team. Today for everything we have done, we deserve the win. They had a lot of chances. In the first half we were better but second half they were better. I am glad we could keep three points.”
Newcastle climbs to 13th place with 45 points from 35 games, now five points behind seventh-placed Brighton.
“We are looking up not down. We can still play European football next season, we must win the next three games,” Guimaraes said.
Newcastle travels to Nottingham Forest and Fulham, and has a home game against West Ham United remaining this season.

Burnley’s relegation was confirmed when it lost 1-0 to Manchester City at Turf Moor last week, its 22nd loss of the season.
It sits 19th in the standings with 20 points from 34 games, joining bottom side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship next season.
“Following confirmation of the club’s relegation from the Premier League last week, Parker and the Board held discussions and mutually agreed that his time at Turf Moor would conclude,” the club said in a statement.
“During his tenure at Turf Moor, Parker guided the Clarets to a record-breaking season in the 2024-25 campaign, securing Burnley promotion from the Championship to the Premier League, with a 31-match unbeaten run, keeping a remarkable 30 clean sheets.”
Burnley said Mike Jackson and existing backroom staff would take interim charge for the remainder of the season while it hunts for a new head coach.
