While most things have gone right for Rajasthan Royals on the field this season, the same cannot be said about what has happened off it. First, there was the incident of the team’s manager Romi Bhinder using the mobile phone in the dugout during the IPL match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
He was fined Rs. 1 lakh and issued a warning by the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit. Royals made the world’s richest cricket body even richer on Thursday, with captain Riyan Parag being fined 25 per cent of his match fee for vaping in the dressing room during the match against Punjab Kings.
The Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara admitted the controversies didn’t really help them. “Such controversies are no positives for the team and all I can say is that both issues have been addressed by the BCCI and the franchise,” he said on the eve of RR’s match against Delhi Capitals. “It is a reminder to the players that they have to maintain the team’s culture.”
About the match, the former Sri Lankan captain said he was expecting a tough challenge from the Capitals, despite their lack of form. “And it looks like another good pitch out there,” he said. “We don’t expect anything less than the best out of DC.”
His skipper may not be in great form, but he pointed out the importance of his knock in the victory against Punjab Kings. “His little innings shifted the momentum in our way,” Sangakkara said. “He brought the momentum back in our favour.”

Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the Code of Conduct during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in New Chandigarh on Tuesday.
The Royals skipper was seen using a vape inside the dressing room as the Royals chased down the target of 223 to hand PBKS its first defeat of the IPL 2026 season.
“Riyan was found to have breached Article 2.21 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which relates to ‘conduct that brings the game into disrepute’”, according to an IPL media advisory.

Riyan admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by the Match Referee, Amit Sharma.
The advisory further mentions that “The BCCI is also exploring other options to initiate proceedings for stringent action against the erring team, its officials and player/s to ensure that the reputation of IPL remains intact.”
The Royals will face Delhi Capitals in their next match in Jaipur on Friday.

Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees…
Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag might be going through one of his leanest spells as a batter in the Indian Premier League. The 24-year-old has struggled so far in IPL 2026, managing just 81 runs from seven innings.
Royals’ coach Kumar Sangakkara, though, isn’t losing sleep over Parag’s batting form.
“I think he’s batting really well,” said Sangakkara on the eve of the Royals’ match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Jaipur on Saturday.
“When you’re batting well, sometimes you don’t always score. I would have been concerned if he wasn’t hitting the ball well. I think he’s hitting it really well. He just needs to stitch together a few more runs so that he sets himself a good platform to attack in the end,” said Sangakkara.
The former Sri Lankan skipper also explained the rationale behind Parag’s elevation as the Royals’ skipper.
“More than anyone else’s influence, why we chose Riyan as captain is that his learning curve has been steep. He has learned a lot from others, but more importantly, from himself.
“I’ve never seen a young player under so much pressure from the start of his career in RR. Riyan was, a lot of the time, front and centre in a lot of our social media. He was always put out there.
“Because he was an exciting young cricketer and had this aura about him. A pretty good-looking guy as well. But that also brings with it a lot of pressure. And sometimes it’s unfair to have such a young guy be under that pressure. I think he has learned a lot from those experiences,” added Sangakkara.
The Royals coach added that Parag will continue to have the team’s backing as it expects him to grow into the role.
“As a player, as a batter, the franchise backs him 100 per cent. And what’s really exciting for me is to see how he has just embraced the captaincy and the leadership. And you can see even in the last game how good a captain he was. So, I think he will learn more and more about pressure and he will get better.”

A fortnight is a long time in a fast-moving tournament like the Indian Premier League.
Two weeks ago, the Rajasthan Royals was on top of the world, having won its first four IPL 2026 games. Around the same time, Sunrisers Hyderabad was floundering, having lost four of its five games.
But, as the two teams come together at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Saturday for the first game of the season in Jaipur, the narrative has transformed.
Over their last three games, the Royals have tasted the bitterness of the law of averages, as their seemingly hypersonic top-order has screeched to a near halt.
Consecutive failures by openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi have denied the Royals an early launch, exposing their undercooked middle-order.
Incidentally, the first team to apply the brakes on the Jai-Soorya duo was SRH, in their first meeting of the season in Hyderabad.
Riding on four-wicket hauls from debutant pacers Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain, the Sunrisers had handed Royals their first defeat of the season.

The Royals then suffered another away defeat, to Kolkata Knight Riders, before recuperating with a hard-fought win against Lucknow Super Giants.
Meanwhile, SRH has added two more wins to its kitty – against Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings – and now finds itself fourth in the table.
Adding fuel to its momentum, full-time captain Pat Cummins has returned from injury and will make his first appearance of the season in Jaipur.
For rival skipper Riyan Parag, IPL 2026 has been a mixed bag. With the bat, he has cut a sorry figure, aggregating just 81 runs from seven innings.
But, on the leadership front, Parag has shone, marshalling his side adeptly to win five out of seven games and occupy the second spot in the standings.
The sharpest tool at Parag’s disposal has been the express-pace duo of Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger.

With their combined prowess with the new ball, Royals have claimed 18 wickets in the PowerPlay, the most by any team in IPL 2026.
On Saturday, the Archer-Burger axis will look to unsettle SRH’s in-form opener Abhishek Sharma, who smashed a blazing hundred (135*) against Delhi Capitals in the last game.
On the opposite corner, Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi would be on the lookout for payback against Hinge and Sakib.
Both these early-game tussles and their outcomes could determine the course of Saturday’s game. The Jaipur crowd, which had to wait half a season to watch its team in flesh, would naturally be yearning for the game to swing the Royals’ way.

Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag said his team’s first Indian Premier League (IPL) defeat of the season was caused by a combination of factors, including his usually explosive batters’ inability to read the pace of the deliveries against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
After an underwhelming display with the ball, it was a rare collective failure of Rajasthan’s explosive top order, comprising Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Dhruv Jurel, as SRH handed the Royals a 57-run hammering in Hyderabad on Monday.
“I think it was a mix of everything. I felt we were a little surprised by what the pace of the ball was when it left the hand and how it came off the wicket,” Parag said at the post-match press conference.
“…I think Vaibhav expected it a little quicker, came a little stickier. Same for Dhruv, nipped back in. Jaiswal, he hits that 9 out of 10 times, and that stopped. I got a really full ball, I couldn’t hit that. I won’t say we were unlucky, but then it was a mix of a lot of variables that came into play, hence we couldn’t connect those shots,” he added.
Parag, who has taken over the RR captaincy this season, felt the bowlers also came up short in execution despite having the required quality.
“Initially, I think we were okay, but then in the middle overs, they were 30 runs over for sure. I think we could have found better options, used the wicket a little bit more, used more slower balls, maybe slower bouncers, wide yorkers or whatever it is. But I think just the execution lacked a bit, nothing about the quality of our bowlers. I don’t doubt that at any time,” he added.
Parag was full of praise for teenage sensation Suryavanshi, backing the youngster to go a long way.
“In 10 years, he’s going to be my age, so I don’t know how to look that far up ahead, but as far as now is concerned, I hope he is in a really good mental state. (He should) just win more games, bat as flamboyantly as he has been doing throughout the four or five games, whatever it is, and win us a title, and hopefully he plays for India very soon.”
Suryanvanshi, who made his IPL debut last year, has played 12 matches in the league across two seasons.
“I feel one thing you gain every time you step onto a cricket field is experience, and regardless of his age, he might be 15 years old, but he has gained a lot of experience playing last year. From the sidelines, you do gain a little bit of experience, you do understand how the game works, how IPL works, but then him having played seven games and then keeping that momentum, playing the World Cup (Under-19), Asia Cups (age-group), and he’s scored runs everywhere he’s gone. I think he has earned a lot of experience from those games, being in match situations, winning games, scoring a lot of runs, big runs, like daddy hundreds.”

Rajasthan Royals performance coach Siddhartha Lahiri heaped praise on captain Riyan Parag for the side’s winning start to IPL 2026.
Royals outclassed Chennai Super Kings in their tournament opener in Guwahati before pipping Gujarat Titans away from home as Parag began his stint as permanent captain on a high.
“The credit goes to the captain. He is young, and a lot has been written about him.
“It starts from the top. And remember one thing – [a] cricket [team] will always be led by the captain,” said Lahiri on Monday on the eve of Royals’ clash against Mumbai Indians in Guwahati.

“Even though he is young, his cricketing mind is better than that. And he proved it. It is because he is calm and composed under pressure. Even last year, when he wasn’t the [full-time] captain, he never buckled under pressure,” he added.
Lahiri pinpointed the execution of the final over in Royals’ win against Titans, when Tushar Deshpande defended 11 runs, as an example of Parag’s tactical acumen.
“Giving the ball to Tushar was a very big move. Before the first ball [of the final over], third-man was pushed back. And if you see how Rashid Khan played that ball, it would have been a four if third-man was up.
“When the captain believes that Tushar can deliver, when he gives the 19th over to Jofra Archer based on Dhruv Jurel’s input – it is only possible when there is chemistry and trust within the team. That is when the players perform,” suggested Lahiri.
Despite the strong start, Lahiri believes it is important for the Royals to stay grounded and stick to their plans.
“I think it’s still very early days for us. We have just played two games and we have done well. It’s a long season. So we can’t get excited. Our biggest challenge would be to stay level and just keep following the simple processes that we have been doing. And as long as we are doing that and not getting too worried about results, we will land up in good positions.”
