A Tennessee school board member is facing mounting backlash after telling a high school student, “God, you’re hot” during a public meeting, before later insisting he “didn’t mean anything by it.”
The controversial moment involved Keith Ervin, who remarked while speaking to a teenage girl who had addressed the board with questions.
According to footage from the meeting, Ervin not only made the comment but also placed his arm around the student, drawing criticism from viewers who said the interaction crossed a line.
“God you’re hot, you know that? Where do you go to school at?” he is heard saying in the clip, which has since spread widely online.
Despite the backlash, Ervin has stood firm, defending his remarks and claiming they were taken out of context.
He told a local news outlet that he had been impressed by the student’s performance during the meeting, particularly the questions she asked.
“I mean, I was impressed and the other board members were impressed because of the question she asked,” he said.
“And, you know, I’m old school. I’m an old farm boy. And I didn’t mean nothing by anything. I just was proud of her.”
Ervin has also suggested that viral clips circulating online do not show the full context of the exchange, though he has not clarified what additional context might change public perception.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with critics arguing that such comments are inappropriate, particularly in a formal setting involving a minor.
A petition calling for Ervin’s removal has quickly gained traction, attracting thousands of signatures from concerned community members.
As pressure continues to mount, the controversy has reignited debate over professional conduct in public office, and where the line should be drawn when interacting with students.
